Why doesn't the show get fresh comedians anymore?
14 2014-03-31 by [deleted]
For the longest time the O&A show was the spot to find out about new comedians. But it seems like they have settled on their core group and just rotate them. Is it because Jimmy has hit his comfort level and doesn't want anyone new to to outshine him? I think Jim has gone from the funny guy on the show with plenty of contacts in the comedy world to now being "Jim Norton INC". He's there to sell his wares and doesn't want to have to compete for those ticket sales in his own house.
Anyone else have any thoughts?

yes dan soder and bobby lee PLEASE
1 sukotsuto 2014-03-31
To those who want to hear from Dan Soder, he's a regular at Bawby's YKWD podcast.
I kinda want the whole YKWD crew to be on the show, especially with Bobby around telling them not to scream over each other on the mic.

Fresh comedians? They have been lucky to get their old regulars like Burr and Louie, and only Colin in studio when one of his retard friends has something going on. And don't even get me started on Patrice, he hasn't been on in YEARS WTF!!
13 cdub61208 2014-03-31
Where has Patrice been? I always thought he was gonna go places. Haven't heard much lately.

Yeah, waiting for other people to figure out the whole podcast thing so they can come in and take it by storm. That's what the internet is waiting for.
-2 OpiesTits 2014-03-31
You're close, they got their core guys so they CAN cruise. Having Bobby and Vos in means more Sudoku and Paltalk.
13 [deleted] 2014-03-31
Somethings just can't be recaptured. I don't think you'll ever find a collection of comics as good as Patrice, Burr, CK, DeRosa, Bob Kelly, Vos, Quinn, Dipaolo, or Jim Jefferies again. There are some fresher comedians that are good and come on the show like Dan Soder, but to find a collection of that many comics, of such a high caliber that are that close together as friends doesn't happen often or if ever. Don't get me wrong I'd like to see a newer comics too, but look at ron and fez on raw dog. most of them are a bust. That was a rare moment in radio that was amazing. Also Jimmy isn't filming Life with Louie and doesn't seem to tour as much. Which is half the reason comedians would come in. To fill in for Jimmy. Then SiriusXM got upset and said certain comedians were coming in to much and didn't like all the free promotions they were getting even though they were adding tons of content to the channel.
5 carjam123 2014-03-31
You used "Vos" and "high caliber" in the same sentence. Expect a thank you letter from him very shortly.
5 Ebhagz 2014-03-31
Don't get your hopes up, Vos can't read
1 Wsallgood 2014-03-31
Do you have a round about date for this? I remember it happening, I think Patrice bitched about it on air. But I don't remember when. Must have been during my Lady Di years.
1 Skylinerr 2014-03-31
Dude Bob Kelley has hilarious up and coming comedians on his podcast regularly. They're out there.
8 [deleted] 2014-03-31
Jim is depressed over the success of Burr and Louie. They are playing theaters while Norton is performing in front of 75 people at side splitters
12 [deleted] 2014-03-31
The funny thing is most comedians would KILL for Jimmy's radio gig with O&A.
10 [deleted] 2014-03-31
Jimmy does better than 99% of comedians... He lives in a super expensive apartment in one of the world's greatest metropolis'. Has a constant gig, lots of fans, specials... etc...
7 Its_Just_a_Ridee 2014-03-31
Yea thats true. But i think most struggling or young comedians is a better answer. Not many comedians wanna wake up early and be locked into a job where they have to show up 5 days a week t 630 am. Im sure the older friends of the show would've loved it a couple of years ago, but do you think louis, jeffries, burr, schumer, hart, or rogan would take the job now? no way. They have tv shows and sell out theaters, while jimmy does 75 seaters in shitty cities.
6 HeyBuddays 2014-03-31
Well, to be fair, Jimmy's standup is hot garbage.
Radio plays to his strength. Speed.
3 Lobstrich 2014-03-31
Too true, I only really heard of Jimmy through the show, being a UK listener. I couldn't believe how much his stand up blew considering how quick witted and relaxed he is on the show, and how fucking dirty. He's also awful whenever his friends stick him on in bit parts on whatever-the-fuck projects their doing. He sounds more and more depressed about it all the time the poor bastard.

No way. His specials aren't Louis CK level, but he's a great club/small theatre comic. Joe Rogan is far from an ass kisser, and he says Norton was one of the best he's seen and inspired him to tighten up his act.
3 LouisCGhey 2014-03-31
And Joe Rogan is another funny guy but a terrible stand up. Do you think George Carlin or Bill Hicks would've accepted work at a fucking ICP concert or an obscure 100 view food/celebrity Youtube channel , like Jim? Please.
1 rahtin 2014-03-31
I loved his last special. His Brock Lesnar bit at the end was classic.
1 [deleted] 2014-03-31
Really? I'm certain most comedians would love to have a working gig like Jimmy's because I've heard them say it on the show. Why do you think most of them do podcasts? Also, every comedian works out material in small clubs. Rogan the same guy that sells out theaters regularly works material out at The Ice House Comedy Club which is fucking small. Louis CK, Chris Rock, and many other big names can be seen at the Comedy Cellar and that seats like 250. Some nights its not even packed just half a room. Jimmy just sold out the borgota casino which seats 1,000 plus. I'm pretty sure he sold out both shows. Jimmy sells out theaters all the time. Just because he does small clubs like every other comedian doesn't mean he isn't doing theater shows too. He just doesn't do as many because he doesn't have to. He has his O&A gig. Jimmy is one of the top headliners in the country and was a regular on Leno. just because he sits around and self deprecates doesn't mean his career is as bad as he makes it seem.
0 Its_Just_a_Ridee 2014-03-31
You sound like Jimmy 's agent. I know he's a successful comedian. I'm saying that most of the friends of the show have a lot of other stuff Going on, but a couple of years ago they would of loved it. Comedians that aren't huge right now would obviously want that job more. There's no doubt Jimmy has one of the most coveted spots in the comedy world.

You mean "UGH! You people ask me to come to your cities and where the fuck are you? This is why I never go there! I don't draw!" May be a sign he's not happy with his success?
1 LouisCGhey 2014-03-31
"I don't draw" means the exact opposite of success. People just don't go to see him, because he's not funny on stage, and he has no power behind him at all. He's probably the only guy on the planet who could be friends with Bill Burr, Louie CK, and be a 3rd mic on a fucking radio show, and still have no weight to his name.
0 cados 2014-03-31
Instead of complaining he should make it work for him.
1 scoobe 2014-03-31
Jim's material isn't as good. I swear to fucking god if these comedians just tell stories on stage it would be way better than a prepared set of jokes. Burr, Norton, Florentine ...I just want to hear these guys talk, not put on a show. Florentine and norton were roomates. There's got to be hours of material there.
4 IggysGlove 2014-03-31
Opie doesn't know if someone is cool or funny till someone tells him they are. And sometimes people lie to him. (See:tom papa)

2 ig0tworms 2014-03-31
He was on ron and fez last week or week before when Patrice's wife or whatever was on. Good appearance.
3 [deleted] 2014-03-31
"New" comedians? They've rarely ever had a guy on who doesn't have 20 years under his belt. People can list the exceptions but O&A has never been big on breaking talent.
I wonder if they even expose themselves to new comedians. John Gabrus does a character called Gino the radio intern from Long Island who grew up listening to Opie and anthony - the bit is full of show references - wonder if they've ever even heard of him?
2 MrSerialX 2014-03-31
Jim throwing a temper tantrum on Twitter when busy comics wouldn't get back to him probably didn't help and you can guarantee that's the main reason why we never see at least Jefferies anymore.
1 zozozoz 2014-03-31
Why Jefferies specifically?
1 MrSerialX 2014-03-31
Because right after Jim had the meltdown is when Jefferies stopped coming in unless it was a Friday when Norton was doing Leno (very rare) and during phoners, Norton is always silent if he even stays in the room. There's a thread about it here discussing it.
1 Pedro471 2014-03-31
Jefferies said recently on Joy Mohr's podcast he does O&A whenever humanly possible, he's just busy with Legit and such...
1 VanDamme79 2014-03-31

1 ryanasimov 2014-03-31
Jim used to be protective of fellow comics and quick to talk up how funny they were. Now, not so much. In fact, Opie and Jimmy's real on-air fight (2005?) was because he felt a comic was left waiting due to Opie's disinterest.
1 ZombieTofu 2014-03-31
On a side note, would you like some tofu tom?
1 Icculus1833 2014-03-31
I don't think Jimmy can handle seeing a brand new batch of up and comers leave him in the dust.
1 wolfrhk 2014-03-31
When they were on afternoons on terrestrial, the comics would regularly come in before their evening NJ/NYC/PA gigs. It's a lot harder to wake up around 5-6am for radio and then do a night show because it breaks up the day too much. I think only Jimmy can pull it off regularly, but he has a sleep disorder so it's hard to tell how it affects him in his downtime.
The regular comics were coming to the morning XM show possibly out of loyalty and friendship, but many of them now have their own podcasts that they can broadcast once a week, any time on the day they want, for free, and plug their gigs 24/7.

I think with twitter and social media, there is an over saturation of people who think they are comics. Also, alternative comedy is big right now, and that faggot ass shit doesn't always jive with o and a. They are usually los angeles comedians who are liberal.
1 [deleted] 2014-03-31
That's a cop out. Jim's in the clubs every night, he see who's funny. Oh yeah, he claims not to watch other comics do their sets because he's afraid it will influence him.
1 dirtfarmingcanuck 2014-03-31
I hate whenever he says that. We've all thought of something at one point or another, thinking it is our own creation, only to hear it somewhere else.
I dont know how he thinks that feigning ignorance will preserve his integrity. Like tranny-jokes are some kind of untouched comedy gold.
0 Happy_ScrappyHeroPup 2014-03-31
What are you going on about? Colin's graduating class? The guys at the Olive Tree table come from different areas and eras. There are just as many great young comics as there ever have been, which is a small number.
2 Slippery_Slope_Guy 2014-03-31
He was referring to the Tough Crowd crowd.
1 Happy_ScrappyHeroPup 2014-03-31
As was I.
Edit: I worded that badly. The Olive Tree is the restaurant/bar that's basically part of the comedy cellar.
0 LouisCGhey 2014-03-31
Probably because O&A has no draw anymore, and they are no longer concerned with being funny or relevant.
Jim has such little pull, even in the O&A office, he can't tell Opie to throw callers under the bus, much less potential talent [there was a time when Jim got mad at some caller and demanded Opie turn down the callers volume so he could shout at him, Opie didn't initially, and Jim threw a fit and spit on the ground: This footage is found on the Youtube video, "Jim is angry at NYPD detectives"].
4 [deleted] 2014-03-31

0 rabblerousersreturn 2014-03-31
Because the entertainment industry only wants comedians that parrot feminism and white guilt. If that isn't your schtick you are shit out of luck. Look at what happened to Bill Burr and Louis CK, they are the opposite of their former selves after tasting a little success.
Toe the line or be unemployed.
0 revbleech 2014-03-31
eeeuch, shut up. There's enough whiny wealthy white men pretending they're being oppressed on the show, we don't need it here.
1 rabblerousersreturn 2014-03-31

0 revbleech 2014-03-31
Please, tell us more about how "feminism and white guilt" are keeping people off of the show that features a Nazi fetishist every fucking day, somehow. Your keen insight into the white male's lack of a voice in mainstream media is breathtaking.
