I saw Jimmy, and I liked it.

I've made plenty of statements in this sub regarding Jimmy's stand up act, and they weren't in his favor. I never saw him live and my only exposure to his stage work was through his specials, which I thought were pretty awful. Knowing that I wasn't a fan of his stage act, but love him on O&A, I decided to to see Jimmy this past weekend in VA Beach. And I must say, he was fucking great. His set was topical, relevant and void of his typical shock branded humor. He also appeared to be very comfortable on stage, perhaps due to it being a smaller venue versus a theater, but there was no excessive blinking or awkwardness that sometimes comes through on his previous specials.

I suppose the point of this thread is, a lot of you had the same opinion regarding regarding Jimmy, which is, he's hilarious on the show but wasn't a fan of his stand up act, AND I wanted to let you guys know he's greatly evolved on stage and do not let his previous specials, if you weren't a fan of them, deter you from seeing him.

Anyway, he converted me.

There is something off with his timing or energy or something with his specials. I've seen him live several times and there is something just not right compared to his live show. I used to think it might be that he fills the audience with O&A fans who over laugh at anything he says but I'm not sure that's it anymore after seeing his last EPIX special.

Some comedians get uncomfortable when they know they're being filmed, can you imagine a Rich Vos special? He would be so wide eyed and frightened

Uhhh... heresccchhh the sccchinggg....

I'll eat the cooshchieeeee

Motschah Baaaalllll.

Shet up

Vos is actually really good on camera. That's why he got so far on Last Comic Standing. He also plays up his dumbness for the show. If you see him live he's sharp and fast as hell

I saw Vos back in 06' with Bonnie and they both killed it. I was so thankful I wasn't close to the stage as he was brutal when doing crowd work.

When I saw them there was a high school trip from Canada with like 40-50 students in the (120 person) room. They were brutalized, especially the chaperones

what kind of high school takes field trips to a comedy club? i wish i went there.

well he does have an IQ of 140, of course he's sharp

if people really think he's that dumb then they are stupid, mostly all of his word "mess ups" are pre calculated, whenever i hear them going to do that bit i cringe.

shows picture of miley cyrus

"ahhhhh miles crayon"

come on guys open your ears

best counterpunch in the business.

Jimmy would never be uncomfortable in front of a camera. He would never think about what he was supposed to be doing with his hands.... evar.

i remember before i started listening to OnA i saw his comedy central half hour and i thought it was pretty funny and i was a fringe comedy fan at the time, i just think vos has great stage presence, nobody that looks like that should have that confidence.

ide say im a good looking guy and my girlfriend is beautiful but i would never wanna be front row, that ugly fuck would destroy me.

if he wasnt on OnA with his friends for so many years being shit on then nobody would think he was some boob, they would think "wow this guy with a lisp is hilariously vicious" but the guys and the OnA comics jokingly call him a hack and make fun of him so all of the sheep fans have to feel the same way.

Vos is a bit like those drunken masters you see in a karate movie. He stumbles over his words, can't seem to form complete thoughts relevant to intelligent conversation, and says goofy shit constantly, but it's all a ploy. He's a goddamn kung-fu murderer when it comes to thinking on his feet and being funny.

I do think Vos is hilarious, when i said wide eyes i was referring to when he would do scripted segments on tough crowd.

he gets so caught up in making a special that will 'break' him and everytime he gets a laugh he gets this "omg it's happening!" smile on his face. everything feels forced.

I saw him years ago at the cellar and he fucking killed.

he needs to record a special in a dump...tape every set for a week or two so it gets less intense and then cut together an hour from it.

I think I laughed once during his Epix special. I was continually laughing for nearly an hour last weekend.

I was at the taping for his last special and couldn't stop laughing and I thought it was good when it came out on EPIX but watching an edited down version on TV just can't compete with live comedy. The atmosphere of being in a building full of people laughing makes it much more fun.

That's true to an extent.

His delivery in the specials usually does look really rehearsed and kinda stiff in a way.

I saw him back in January and thought he was fantastic

GIYUV YERSELF UH BEYULLLL!!!!!!!!

I'll second this and even say I've seen him twice.

First time was in a smaller venue and he was awesome. I went into that show thinking the same as you; that his stand-up was sub-par but he was brilliant on the show. He changed my mind.

Second time was at a festival in a big room. He was less good. His stage work/movement/comfort isn't as good when it's a big room. He works better when it's a small stage and a small room, maybe because he can play to the room better.

Why? Who knows? Anyway, you're right. Small room Jimmy is great!

Small room Jimmy is great!

this is the best way of seeing Jimmy

The studio is also undoubtedly a small room. Maybe there's a correlation?

I don't care for his standup but I'd still love to see him live and would have a great time.

Your opinion will change if you see him live, provided he is as good as he was this past weekend.

I know what you mean, I never watched any of his specials all the way through, but being in a comedy club or a theatre watching him is a whole different experience. He was hilarious in person. His stand up content is just getting better. I think he knows why he has hit this plateau, he sort of pigeonholed himself with all the sexual content, and is moving out of it which is good. I'm just going from what I saw recently. He was very humble after the show too. Sweet boy.

Yeah, he seemed really down to earth. I was watching him take photos after the show and appeared to be a very cool dude.

of course he is, he's not fucking elvis, how many times outside of a comedy club are people asking for his autograph, idk why he complains though, that seems like the greatest life having a huge following but still being able to walk around in public, same goes for Op and Ant.

I've seen less famous people be dicks to fans.

Saw him in the Anti-social tour about two years ago, he was the second lest funny comedian out of 5; right after Artie Lang. I still have hope for him, I'll still watch his next standup, but he always tries to bring topics from the show into his act. He constantly has to explain an entire story to an audience so they can be on the joke, I don't enjoy that. I wish he would decide to be more prolific. Btw, my favorite comedy special is Captain Miserable.

The only time he mentioned the show is when he broke out Chip. He had to explain to some in the audience why he was acting and talking like a retard. Like I said, though. A majority of his act was stuff I haven't heard him say on the show which I think is why it was so enjoyable.

In his past specials I knew exactly where he was going with every joke for the reasons you've mentioned. But this new hour is completely different, which is what I meant.

"It's not like he does his actual bits from the show, in his act. That would be fucking awful."

I don't know, man. I could easily sit through an hour of a Chip Chipperson riffing on stage.

I could definitely believe that. I also don't get how brilliant radio jimmy becomes such a stiff mediocre comedian in his specials. but when I see clips of his stand up online when it's just a 10 min set it's really great,he finally talks in just a conversational matter as he does best.

I saw him live in front of probably 80 people a couple months ago and he absolutely killed.

Saw him at VA Beach as well. Was a damn good show!

Conversational Jimmy (sans political topics) = good. Filming a special Jimmy = bad

I have seen Jimmy exactly one time and I thought he was hilarious. It was nonstop funny.

I have watched parts of his specials and did not think that they were bad. He is better live though.

He stinks ... and I don't like him.

I doubt he'll be coming anywhere near Montreal so I'll probably never see him.

Doesn't he do the Montreal Comedy Festival? Or at least, I think he has previously done it.

He does maybe 15 minutes at the Nasty Show, not even remotely worth it.

Gotcha.

How many people were at the show? He always acts like no one goes

The Funny Bone in VA Beach here has a capacity of up to 350 people. I was sitting right next to the stage and walked through the crowd a few times to go to the restroom, and I'd say it was was very close to being sold out. I was shocked when I arrived at 6 PM for the 7 PM show as there were easily 100 people waiting to get inside and/or buying tickets at the box office.

You had to go to the restroom a few times during the span of a comedy show? What'd you have for dinner, a bag of prunes and a handful of diuretics?

I have this problem where if I have to go pee slightly, that's all I think about until I actually go, and it consumes my thoughts and ruins whatever I'm trying to enjoy. I imagine it's like what an OCD person might go through? If I'm at a movie, concert or comedy show I try and make sure I go to the bathroom as many times as possible before the show starts so I don't miss any of the act or movie I paid to see. For the record, I didn't go to the restroom during Jimmy's act.

Pro Tip: next time you feel the need to pee, stroke yourself to a hard on, the feeling will pass

haha.. WTF?

That's true. I'm doing it right now.

When in public make eye contact with the person with the best view of your crotch. For bonus points be sure to whisper dirty talk just loud enough for people to hear.

This is perfectly legal because the cops will understand you were trying to not pee. Source: Internet Lawyer Dude

Well I feel like a dick now

I used to go there when I was in the Navy and lived in VA Beach. Was the crowd military?

It's hard to say as most members of the military don't wear their uniforms out in public. But I did see some haircuts that were typical of military personnel.

I saw him before and agree that he was topical, which is why I didn't like it. Topical jokes just don't work well nowadays with "the 24 hour news cycle". When I saw him he did a john tracolta bit, except that the john travolta thing came and went so fast that it was weird

What I meant by topical in this case is that I was happy he was doing jokes that were relatable to the mainstream, not just jokes that provide a glimpse into his perversions. As well as he covered a wide range of topics, not just limiting to his act to sex. I think comedy is at it's funniest when we can relate to what is being said on stage. I just have a tough time relating to hooking up with a Tranny.

I saw Tracy Morgan years ago (when he was on SNL) and he was fucking horrible. Way worse than Jimmy with regard to sexual content in his act. ALL he talked about was sex and it was not funny in the slightest. I recall a few people gasping during his show and a handful of folks left mid show.

Ah I see. I saw Patton oswalt two years ago and he was so good. Granted I am also a nerd, but I wonder if people far removed from that world would feel thee same way many do about jimmy.

I suppose as long as it's funny, it will translate well. But Jimmy's sex bits just aren't funny. I'd like to see Patton but he doesn't come to this area, which is weird because this is where he grew up.

I saw him in Providence about 6 years ago and I felt the same. His stand up show was very good but his specials have been very eh to me. I enjoyed Monster Rain but the latest one was just kinda okay.

I saw him in Pittsburgh (Muuunhaaalll, birthplace of Jeff Goldblum and most recently, hit and runs) a few weeks ago.

Ridiculously funny, more so than Bill Burr's show I saw in September. Bill may put on a better special, but Jimmy was leaps and bounds funnier in person.

Saw him and Attel in Vegas, it was a fantastic show. They commented on the audience being pretty awake which I guess isn't normal for Vegas so they seemed to have a lot of fun

I was at Jimmy's last taping, It was non-stop laughs.. Since it's been out on demand I can not make it through it. Yes, There is something to being there verses watching at home, and yes the jokes get burned up after hearing them the first time. But I was buzzed enough and have left enough time in between views to forget most of it. I think the problem that Jimmy faces is that, outside of his fuck/tranny stories (which are good) the rest of his act is deeply routed in current events and by the time the specials post the references have become to dated. Besides his characters, Which I love, Jimmy is good at 'disposable comedy' which is great for radio, but not for stand-up specials.

you laugh at the theatre, but not at home because of alcohol consumption.

That is a good theory, but I do try to be drunk no matter where I happen to be.

You are doing the Lord's work.

jim Norton is the best sit-down comedian in the game. he's very GOOD at stand-up but obviously much greater in smaller circles.

I can agree with that.

yeah he might be an alright comic but he will never be on the level of his peers (colin, patrice, burr, ck) and thats fine most people dont get on that level, and he will never get on that level bitching about people not coming to his shows.

thats like telling a girl you like how you'll never get her and that your so ugly and stupid, like god damn jim have some confidence youre only the funniest comic ever to grace the third mic.

i think when he was on one of the biggest radio shows at the time and all of his now peers were still struggling comics he felt great, and then everyone passed him and he's on a declining show, but still he shouldnt whine, anyone would kill to be in his spot.

I've seen Jimmy live 3 times now. Last two times were in 2011 and 2012, and both were before his "Please Be Offended" special, so it mostly contained material from that which made the second show not as funny. Also it was the 11:00 show in a half-empty Orlando Improv, so he didn't really give it his all. Either way, Jim's a riot to see live, especially when there's a good crowd in attendance.

Another guy who's great in person is Bobby Kelly.

I saw him a couple months ago when he was in the process of writing his new special which is probably mostly what you saw this weekend and he killed the room ive seen him a couple times and this time around was definitely his best

Nice try lil' Jimmy. We know that's you.

I don't think people realize that stand up comedy in a club and comedy in a theater/1 hour special are 2 completely different things.

Does he at least have jokes? I only saw Monster Rain and 90% of that was one huge rant with weak punchlines, sorta Jim going "ANYONE ELSE AGREE!?" every single time.

Yeah, he was like a traditional comic.

I always kind of suspected that his smaller non-special stand up shows would be more loose and work better, more like him on the radio.

I also heard he does WAY more characters, Uncle Paul and Chip and stuff, at these gigs. I would love to see those. So I probably would go see him do standup.

I do agree about his specials, but I thought Yellow Discipline and Please Be Offended were pretty good.

Does anyone give a shit?

"I'll give him another chance"

Thank God, I was worried that you wouldn't

Yeah, I'd encourage it. My first post in this sub was in reference to how I love him on the show but did not like his stand up act. He converted me this past weekend; however, my opinion still stands on his previous specials.

Motschah Baaaalllll.
