They copied it from Stern's movie. Stern didn't try it until after the movie and it didn't work. And Opie's so fucking stupid that he forgot to tell the actress on the phone that there's a 7 second delay at a minimum between the phone conversation and what comes through her speakers - it's not instantaneous like they pretended. And there would be an echo on her end of the conversation if her speakers were turned up that loud.
