Her early career at the Mack Sennett studios was derailed by her real-life battles with drinking after an on-set accident in 1909 with an locomotive seriously injured costar Fatty Arbuckle, whose addiction to opiates has been traced to the accident by film scholars David Bordwell[1] and Will Fowler [2].

After being fired from the studio her career floundered and she had difficulty maintaing steady employment at any studio, and her unsucessful attempt to gain distribution as an independent exacerbated her substance abuse problems.[3] An attempt at a comeback in 1914 as a sober "Stone-Faced" comedienne was unsuccessful, and she spent the rest of the decade in unemployment and relative obscurity until her death at age 60 from cirrhosis of the liver.

Film scholars agree[3][5][6] that if her associates and friends in `14 had followed through on their tries to get get to fully sober up and enter medically supervised rehabilitation her early death would've been averted.
