Why are R&F callers so much better than O&A callers?

13  2014-03-12 by BadbCatha

I rarely listen to Ron and Fez, but from the bits I've heard here and there, their callers seem less embarrassing. They're usually concise and contribute to the topic. O&A callers are usually awkward and add nothing. My theory is it's because Opie is terrible. He puts callers with unfunny jokes on the air because he has no sense of what's funny. He takes calls from people who want to repeat something Ant or Jim said because he wasn't listening. And finally, the most annoying thing he does, takes a call, then immediately talks over the person and gets pissy about the guy not being quiet.

What do you dudes think?

Opie, Anthony and Jimmy like to shit on callers. I've been listening for many years and usually intelligent callers disagree with some part of the boys' opinions because they often oversimplify, exaggerate, and are for the most part uneducated on the subjects they are talking about.

When said caller tries to make a point, they get called baby boy, retard, etc. It happened over the course of so many years that I doubt anyone with anything intelligent to say would bother waiting on the phone just to get bashed and shit on if you disagree with O&A or Jimmy. On the other hand, if you agree with them, they have no use for your call most of the time unless they are really trying to stretch the bit for time.

In contrast, the R&F show display civility to their callers and if you suck, the most they'll do is move on to the next guy. Rarely does Ron or Pepper talk over callers and if they ever call someone an idiot, there's always a chuckle behind it.

Just think of how many times O&A talk loudly over good points just because they can make their mics louder than your phone call? How about when they clamor over each to make a desperate joke when a caller is still talking? Though it certainly fits the vibe of the show to do that, it's still considered very rude in normal every day life, which is where people call from. Why would anyone with worthwhile things to say/contribute waste their time like that? It's not that they only put halfwits through, it's that only halfwits would bother calling in the first place given O&A history.

Hey I couldn't hear you your cell dropped out....

He said that...hello.. hello?

The callers that call up to "make a point" always fall for the bait, though. They say whatever it is they want to say, Op, Ant, Jim start yelling or doing whatever they do to disrupt the call, and then the caller starts yelling back.

Don't get me wrong, it's good radio for me, but how about not responding to their bullshit?

Exactly, the people who wouldn't respond to their bullshit wouldn't call in the first place because they know in advance that bullshit is coming their way. Also, yelling back at them is fun.

You sound like a bitter ex-caller

The screaming matches with callers makes for great radio, so either way I'm getting my money's worth.

They don't call them baby boy when intelligent callers come on. The thing is that intelligent callers do not listen to the program. They listen to NPR or some shit. The callers that come on and disagree with their point of view, 99% of the time, cannot articulate their opinion coherently enough to be of any use to them, hence the reason they get shit on. Rarely, you get a guy who is boring, but he isn't making up some lie, and he will actually tell them important information i.e. that caller a few days ago calling about planes and transponders. I've also heard callers call in which have put their point across, for instance regarding free speech, and they have a little discussion, and then Opie says after a while, "We'll just agree to disagree.". No one called each other names, no one yelled over another, they discussed the issue in a civil manner. Most of the yelling over is usually done by Anthony after some clown provokes them by instigating a fight.

The thing about callers is, one of them is a failure, but if you have two of them go at it (and the show does this from time to time), that's where the entertainment is. I remember when Larry called and said something about religion and homosexuality, and then everyone else chimed in just to shit on him. Now that's good radio.

Also, it seems that if you agree with their point, they'll just let you on. They let a whole bunch of yes men on the radio who add nothing to the program. "Hey guys! Love you, love the show! B b b b b boys!"

Ron & Fez callers call to contribute to a radio show. O & A callers call because they want to be friends with the boys.

Ain't nobody lyin', I didn't go to no show last night!

True and i also think o and a screen calls that they know are gonna be bad just to moch them for better radio

Very true comment. This reminds me of that caller who wanted to complain about Ellen at the Oscars and her joke about how everyone is racist if 12 Years a Slave doesn't win. The guy was so flustered and said how racist that was and the boys didn't agree with him at all. He even said how he learned to hate stuff like that because he listened to them. It was just douchey how he thought he shared something with them and wanted to stir things up.

They are just needy. They've been told to stop saying "b b b b boys" but every caller follows the same script. "Hey guys! Love you, love the show!"

"Hey guys, long time listener, first time caller!"

It's so needy, O&A have said it before, make your point and move on. My favorite call is Unnecessary Cruelty, where some guy just mouthed off stale joke after stale joke until Jimmy just unleashed on him. "Good eeeevening!" "MAKE YOUR POINT AND MOVE ON!"

Yes. Shawn f made dumb songs with bad fat jokes so he could be there friend and it worked

The callers actually respect ron and ron actually shows his callers some respect. Also, besides fez, no one on the ron and fez show is hateable. If you go to their sub reddit, ron, pepper, and shelby are pretty universally loved. People tend to hate on o and a and Jimmy a lot more cause they invite it by being way more negative and way more assholes to their fans.

Also, opie does it to kill time. Jimmy even said today that almost all the callers stink. When opie doesn't feel like working, he goes to the phones or calls lady di or something.

Hey, let's cold-call Paul Williams. I know its 3am there but fuck him, he's short.

It's because everyone thinks they're as funny as the hosts of the show.

Unscreen Caller Day was a fucking goldmine bit, so goddamn funny.

YES!!! That was awesome.

If you remember, O&A callers used to just call in, give a quick line, and punch out. That was back in the terrestrial days when O&A were at their peak. As the show turned completely to pop culture talk, politics, and news, the caller base sort of changed with it, and became boring or humorless or long-winded.

Ron has kept the quality of the R&F show pretty high all these years. I think the old school R&F callers have hung in there and are still contributing what they used to. His show is a well-oiled machine like O&A used to be, even with Fez having lost his mind.

I've listened to some old shows from '01, and '02 and in a lot of those shows there were a ton of funny callers. Some were as funny or funnier than O&A too. I think part of it was that the show was faster paced too. They'd end your call if you didn't wrap it up or get to the point fast enough and they'd just jump to the next call. Plus they wouldn't try to have very a fucking long conversation with someone unless there was something really cool that the caller was bringing up.

I think a big reason for the difference now is that they don't get anywhere near the number of callers that they used to. It's easy to cherrypick callers and keep it fast paced when you have 100 to choose from at any given time, but when you only have 10, it's not as easy to do that.

As much as they boast about being 'above' radio, the WNEW shows from '07 seem to be a lot more fun to listen to.

Calls and also Instant Feedback. They used to get great one-liners from the Instant Feedback that they would read on the air all the time.

It was almost a competition to put up good jokes, so they would get read for the whole audience.

Instant Feedback, or Paltalk as it is known as nowadays, is pretty terrible now. It used to be funny. They used to read funny lines.

Not to say the fanbase isn't funny anymore, there are plenty of you that are funny on this reddit. The mainstream fans in the Paltalk live room, and the ones on the phones, they are incredibly boring or it seems like they just scream for Ant's attention by making racist comments. Yeah, you're the 1000th guy in there spamming anti-black shit. Ant's REALLY gonna notice you.

Paltalk is not and never was Instant Feedback - they both existed at the same time, back in the day. Paltalk is a pretty small group of people who are the same idiots all the time.

I've always found the Paltalk crowd to be a bit strange and creepy, and only Ant looks at it. Opie and Anthony both used to pull stuff off Instant Feedback all the time.

And let's be honest that when they made the move to XM, they admit that the fan base was mostly truckers because XM wasn't in very many cars yet. So they gave up on callers, and never really went back to being a "call in" show.

I thought that having the live audience really helped for a while, but then Sirius had to go and fuck that up, too.

Technically Instant Feedback is dead as it only existed on the O&A site, but Paltalk is what Ant uses nowadays to get feedback.

I agree that Paltalk is creepy and overtly racist in order to get Ant's attention, and it's stupid. You can't even follow the chat in there most of the time because it's filled with people.

Yes Instant Feedback is totally dead.

It's too bad they don't have anything similar, that is accessible to more people than Paltalk. Maybe they could use Twitter like Instant Feedback, but they don't seem to.

They did. As I said before, Opie would take calls from Steve. Yeeeeeees. Hellooooooo. The callers were also bad there too, but they'd do funny shit like wake people up with pots and pans. The thing is...for the last few years now the caller has tried to act a lot smarter than he or she actually is, and tell bullshit stories which are so obviously false. O&A frequently call them out on this, yet they keep taking the calls.

Have you not heard Janice from Chicago?

HYIIIH RHANNNEE giggles

Ron & Fez don't keep callers on the air long enough to fail.

This is probably the answer.

Ron takes call for one line and then its over. Usually they mock stupid Fez.

Hard to be a terrible call under those circumstances.

O&A mostly talks among themselves.

R&F welcomes the caller to talk with them.

The former wants to keep the momentum (of funny or whatever) going while the latter wants to ease up and discuss a topic with people.

If O&A allows too much caller input, it may break the flow of whatever they're going with. If R&F doesn't have much caller input, it may break the flow of the discussion they have on air.

I reckon it's just different styles and strengths.

I mostly communicate with the show/friends of the show through Twitter if I feel like I've got something to add. Mainly because of my voice/tone. People think of deep voices as seductive and manly, but mine mostly puts people to sleep. Ron tends to be a bit more open with callers than O&A and bounces things off of them a bit more. Ron is better with solo radio broadcasting than either Opie or Anthony in my opinion, but O&A are a better duo than R&F, which is basically Ron and Shelby/Pepper at this point.

Im still waiting for the Ron & little old lady that lives near Ron show.

Communicating on Twitter to them is safer, but if you disagree with them you may find yourself on Block island.

I'm obnoxiously non-combative. Erock blocked me at one point for something I have no idea about, but he's since unblocked me after mentioning it in a conversation we were both in with Linz.

probably because O&A don't like taking calls (justifiably so) and almost no matter what fuck with the callers. Ron always welcomes the callers and doesn't give them a premise to be nervous or expected to be made fun of.

Ron doesn't cater to cable news watchers and truck drivers.

I'll admit I've always been way to pussied to call O&A even when I know I have a good point make.

I've never been scared to call Ron though.

The level of caller on OnA is so low that any tard could call up and sound intelligent.

HOLD ON! HOLD ON! HOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLD ON!!!!

It's easy to contribute when the topic is "make fun of fez", especially when fez doesn't respond at all and Ron is basically fully supporting it. So there's a lot of pressure off of the callers and they can relax a bit to do their thing.

Also not everything is opie's fault, who after all screen's the calls?

I also think O&A don't take calls frequently enough, so people are not used to it. There's no point to sitting on hold if they are not going to take any calls at all.

Back when they used to take lots of calls, on WNEW, the average call was better IMO.

R&F take lots of calls, so there are regulars, and the screeners know who will have decent comments, and people know calling is worthwhile because R&F actually pick up the phone.

Opie: "John Doe from NYC you're on the air"

Caller: Hi I jus-

Chip: MORE LIKE JOE BUCKS OR SUMPTIN

(awkward beat because caller doesnt wanna step on anybody and get yelled at)

Opie: JOHN LET'S GO

Caller: Yeah sorry I didn't wanna step on-

Opie: OH MY GOD NOBODY CARES

(call has now been considered pointless)

Anthony: THIS IS WHY I HATE CALLERS

:scene:

They're too nice now. They just sit back and let the caller blab on and on instead of pranking them more. We need more WE HEARD YOUS.

probably cause Ron doesn't ponce on the callers.

de leon?

I got the joke

I know, we heard me.

Ponce? What, is he schemin' or somethin'? Tsss ...

Ponce? What about like Ptwice or somethin?

Ptwice

He's dead.

How did it happen?!

TAKE US TO COMMERCIAL PIGGY BOY

I honestly think they only put the halfwits through.Occasionally a decent caller sneaks on that can shut down any of the angry rants one of the boys might be having ,but that's rare.

On the other hand,if the boys are making a decent point, like Palin is a cunt, they are obviously going to air the dumb folk who think Palin is a genius.Makes good radio.

It's called call screeners. O&a only let the dopey ones on air.

The O&A call screeners themselves are dopey. Don't seem to have a clue what a good caller sounds like.

i dont think the o&a show is interested in good callers. they're interested in idiots they can trash on air.

They used to love the callers. When the callers were good, they used to say "we have the best callers" (also applied to Instant Feedback).

Now the callers are mostly idiots so, to make the best of it, they trash them on air. In the rare case where a good caller occasionally gets through, they do tend to run with it. I think the callers are mostly idiots because O&A never take calls, so most intelligent people won't even bother to try and call in.

[deleted]

And as if to prove you wrong, they actually took calls, and didn't trash them. Maybe Opie is reading these comments.

aids?

RnF is simply put a "call-in radio show" that involves the callers/audience much more. Whether they call in, twitter, or ibang comment.

Also, RnF callers are more well trained with the bits on the show. Life Boat, What's in the Box, The 5, Caption This. All of these have infinite variations, but it's the same game. Funny wins.

It helps that R&F do a lot more comedy-pyramid type bits that lend themselves to the callers firing off a quick one-liner and hanging up. O&A hardly do that anymore; the last time I remember them doing anything like that was when everyone called in with awful puns after doing that story about the guy jerking off with cheese.

I think anytime you give a caller more than a few seconds on the air you're asking for trouble.

They used to a long time ago...the callers used to be funny and imitate Steve. Opie would pick up phone calls from "Steve" way back in the day

I rarely listen to Ron and Fez but through the replay a few days ago of the Cake Horn incident, some caller got into Fez good and pissed him off. It's been a while since I've heard a call that funny on the radio.

The trouble with O&A? Most of the callers coming on are boring. They tell boring stories, and they also seem to get a lot of truckers too. The few that tend to argue with O&A get shouted over pretty quickly, or they don't articulate their argument (no matter how logical or reasonable) well enough to do any service to their cause.

Occasionally an interesting caller may pop up, but I get the feeling they just let anyone on to ramble and use the same cliche "B b boys". You're not funny, you're the 10000th person doing that, shut the fuck up. I was driving home today listening to mp3 replay and some mook called in with that. I love how they confronted him on it. "DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHO WAS BEHIND THAT?"

Less calling, more O&A&J opinion.

i support your theory that Opie is terrible.

[deleted]

Also...why is ron and fez popular...specifically why is fez still on air? So relieved they swapped channels. Gave new show a listen but seemed like same old show? What changed? Wish ron would ditch him. Ive been o and a fan since 2004ish...ron and fez always gave a listen here and there so im not ignorant to ronnies talents..but i still do not understand why fez is stilk there?? Is his contract almost over? Was he suicidal is that why ron cant let him go?

I didn't know Questionmarks Mcgillicutty was in town!

Yea great response glad you took time out to write

I didn't think it was that great, but thank you for your kindness all the same.
