To be fair I've seen quite a few comedians advertise like this especially at clubs. You'll see things like "a regular on Opie & Anthony", "has been on the tonight show", or something like "featured on the Howard Stern show". Its called name recognition. If I've never heard of a guy, but I see that he's been on Howard in the past I can get an idea of what type of comedian he is, and he must be pretty good because Howard wouldn't let some hack on his radio show. Just using Howie as an example but you get the idea.
