"While the medium of television has struggled to find its footing in the U.S. since the 1970s..."
Stopped reading this 20-something Brooklyn transplant hipster's "analysis" after that sentence. She has nothing to explain to anyone outside of urban farming, independent music, and "art".
Come on, Lady Trucker.
EDIT: Plus, this website is hyper-PC shit. These are the kind of people that talk about ageism, people of color, white privilege, rape culture, and whatever other unscientific terms they make up. The editor of one of these sites straight up said that they purposefully try to be controversial.
So she's promoting capitalism. As in "PC" is obviously to be expected in a country where milking out every dollar is the priority. Who gives a shit about tv talent shows anyways?
I think it'll suffer, there aren't many funny women comedians in Britain. Although, it'll probably help fight the production company / agency cartel that have UK comedy by the balls at the moment.
I know a few girls who read Jezebel fanatically. I also know that a few of them lie about how aggressively they like to be fucked. If there were two spaces above "like a dead $2 whore and then make dinner", they'd check that box on a survey.
I, personally, think this is a good thing. I watch a lot of BBC (and Channel 4) panel shows, the lack of women is very noticeable. For example, a few weeks ago "QI" had 3/4 panellists as women; with the 1/4 male being 2nd to Stephen Fry; it was very refreshing and funny.
This is also the BBC, where it's tax-payer funded; so readdressing gender imbalances among comedy programming is good in my eyes. As it stands, BBC sitcoms are terrible—perhaps pressing forward with gender equality will result in some good shows for the first time in ages. (For an e.g. of this, see "Miranda," it's not my thing but it's hugely popular and well critiqued.)
The problem is that now any woman who goes on one of these shows will have it over her head that she didn't deserve to be on it, she just is on to fill the quota of the token woman. If they aren't funny or entertaining, they shouldn't be on the show, period. Or more aptly, would you be fine if O&A HAD TO have a woman on every broadcast or it would lose funding?
This is just the beginning. Soon, every single race and gender and creed will have to be on each show to make sure everyone knows how forward and progressive the BBC is. Oh no there wasn't an Indian on this show, is the BBC racist?
Its fucking stupid. Let funny people be funny, and be on these shows because they are funny, not some race or gender identifier.
The main problem is that men are funnier to the general public. It's just a fact. According to Forbes, the top 10 highest grossing comedians in 2013 were all men.
What they should do is correlate it to the actual number of females comics in percentage terms, then they would only have one on about every ten years.
Are you kidding me? When I see episodes with mostly women I want to skip that one because they aren't as funny, they even said that in one of the episodes.

You're right, Jezebel's fucking awful. Just full of super third wave feminist, fem-supremacy under the guise of egalitarianism horseshit.

What does that even mean? I don't know what you are trying to say.

Political correctness is the result of a capitalist society.

They also talk about patriarchy.
It should speak volumes about their readership.

Since Steven Fry is gay, does he count as half woman?

So you'd be fine with opie and anthony having to fire jimmy and bring on a hole if they were funded with public money?
1 stevenknight 2014-02-11
Panel shows work on a rotation of different guests every show, so I don't think your comparison is accurate.
