I'm going to stick up for Opie...
34 2014-02-03 by [deleted]
Yes, he's not as funny as Jimmy or Ant. But, he's the captain of the ship. He can smell a bit out and take what Jimmy and Ant are humorously doing and turn it into 30 minutes of radio. He gets more cranky as he gets older, but the dude can drive the boat.

You're Pickett charging headlong into a losing battle with this one, OP.
-27 feelmikehawk 2014-02-03
Upvote for intelligent reference. The vast majority of the people here will need to Google the name.
31 YourOldPalHoward 2014-02-03
You must think you're so uniquely smart.
Any American who paid attention in high school knows about Pickett's Charge. It's not an obscure, forgotten bit of historical trivia, it was the major turning point of the American Civil War, you smug, self-aggrandizing neckbeard.
Give your fellow O&A fans a bit more credit. Cunt.
0 Mitchull 2014-02-03
Next he'll be congratulating himself on being the only one to get a Napoleon/ Waterloo reference.
0 feelmikehawk 2014-02-03
Welcome to the 20% that do know who General Pickett was. I wouldn't want to play you in Trivial Pursuit. Ever think of trying out for Jeopardy?
12 LyleChipperson1 2014-02-03
I like Opie, but no he can't turn Jimmy & Ant's jokes into 30 mins of radio. He does what Bobo does only he has controls of the board. He steamrolls over everything Jimmy & Ant say.
3 okconsumer 2014-02-03
Compared to how he was in 2006/7 , he has greatly improved. Sometimes the old episodes can be unbearable but nowadays I'm rarely bothered by it.
-3 10below 2014-02-03
Sure he can. Those dudes will start busting someone or something apart and Opie will make a game out of it. Listen closer, faggot Chip.
11 jakdak 2014-02-03
Wait wait wait. hold on. Lets break this down.
7 rahtin 2014-02-03
That's code for "We've got nothing, we need to stretch out this bit for another 20 minutes. Call Bobo"
5 regis69 2014-02-03
or take bobo's call in the middle of something and act like it's bobo's fault you chose to pick up during it. "steering the ship"
1 molloybe 2014-02-03
People always bring this up as a bad thing...but that over-analysis is usually what ends with them finding a good angle on a topic, which often results in a great bit.
1 jakdak 2014-02-03
And just as often often results in a 15 minute story about his kids :)
2 molloybe 2014-02-03
The bitching about the kid stories gets heavily exaggerated too. I listen to the show a day late, and from the bitching i read, I expect 3 hours of kid stories. In reality, they rarely last more than five minutes.
0 fireants 2014-02-03
No he's right. They should just glide over topics instead. What I want from o&a is for them to get through a basic summary of the headlines; all these jokes get in the way and slow them down.

Right, right, right. Hold on, hold on, hold on. Pause. Holy fuck. Why can't they figure that out?
10 Djs3634 2014-02-03
Opie interrupts every time he speaks. Think I'm exaggerating?? Prove me wrong.
Why does he ask a question and right as the person begins to answer he interrupts with a retarded statement or an equally retarded question.
He is of no value to the show sorry.
9 Carthac 2014-02-03
I feel there is a lot of irrational dislike towards the guy, but what frustrates me the most about him is his absolute hypocracy and inability to ever look critically at himself. Like his stuff, great. Don't like his stuff? Must be a twitter hater. He absolutely throws out any argument against his content being unfunny/boring by just stating it in his "twitter guy" voice. He seems to no longer be striving to improve, just throwing anything he has out there and expects everyone to love it
BTW, this is a minor dislike only because I spend so much time listening to the show. In the grand scheme of things, the show is still great and he is owed credit for that
14 VanDamme79 2014-02-03
If you ever notice, they don't play fuck you Opie's voicemails on the fuck you line. They play plenty of jimmy and the staff. Even some Ant. But never Opie's. I'm sure callers leave them but the staff knows better than to put them on air.
2 regis69 2014-02-03
and when was the last time they called him out for a bomb? when he gets nothing he will often REPEAT the goddamn bomb and still nothing. i feel like screaming "WE HEARD YOU!!" at my radio.
3 tonioz 2014-02-03
To be fair they never point out Anthony's bombs either, the main three always bail each other out. It actually makes it unlistenable for me sometimes because they really berate the comics who come on. I guess that's the nature of the business though cause no one really has a problem with it except Vos sometimes points it out. Also I'm not really an expert I just listen to the shows on youtube with the comics I like (mainly CQ)
1 GSUkent 2014-02-03
Never noticied this before but I think you're right. I'm sure there's been a few.
8 CBAnaesthesia 2014-02-03
Someone said it in another thread. He's fine when he sticks to what he's good at, but he's not a comic, and when he tries to be, he stutters and stammers through bomb after bomb.
8 keemers 2014-02-03
Once upon a time I would have agreed with the OP, but now I think he derails more than anything. He routinely cuts people off or talks over them. He is always the one that is trying to watch fucking YouTube clips or listen to songs. Now I will nitpick just to vent: I hate how he always says "We are obsessed with that," or "We love that," instead of just speaking for himself. I'm tired of hearing him say RoRo and MON-NAY. Ugh.

The 2 Warsh Rule:
If Opie says "warsh", he will repeat it one more time at a minimum in a slightly different sentence to try and make it funnier.

6 astaticpunk 2014-02-03
Every conversation turns into something about him. How many times did he bring up Rogans podcast? It's always I did this or I did that. Somehow it's always about him. He's a good captain. But as Jimmy would say, look at me, look at me.
5 Mitchull 2014-02-03
I can't believe people still use the "captain of the ship" analogy with a straight face. He fucking sucks. I would like for someone to point me to some clips where Opie saves the day by "steering the ship" out of something stale.
Another line of propaganda is the "Opie is such a good troll". No, he's not. At best he's a ham-fisted attempt at trolling. Anytime something flops he uses the "doesn't get the bit" card.
You know who could do Opies's job better than him? Sam. I dislike Sam, but that fag plays the straight-man role like nobody's business.
3 0100101001010010 2014-02-03
Sam sucks. His incessant girlish giggling ruins bits.

"Opie is the best programmer in radio." -Ron Bennington
1 boogsuge 2014-02-03
to be far Ron was saying something nice about all the guys on his farewell show so he had to say something nice about opie...doesn't Mean he actually believes that.
2 Mitchull 2014-02-03
EXactly.
2 drsteve103 2014-02-03
I have seen the respect they all have for each other. I am convinced Ron meant exactly what he said.
I have seen Op run the show for 7 years now, often up close and personal. He is the consummate radio guy, and he makes me laugh every day. He LOVES the medium of radio...loves its history, knows all the shows, and wishes the medium wasn't dying. He also had the good sense to give me a show on his channel, but that does make me biased, I'll admit.
Op has PASSION for radio; he's not a comic, but comics love him and love to be on the show (well, with a few notable exceptions (e.g., Richard J)).
Anyway, it's just my opinion; I know I won't change anyone else's.
4 JohnQNo1 2014-02-03
You're wrong. He's a narcissistic, creatively bereft doofus who rides the coattails of superior talents like Anthony and Jimmy. He doesnt "direct" shit. If this is his idea of "steering" then Sam could do it and at least Sam wont interject details about his boring life or worthless opinions when the funnier guys are riffing or pull the emergency brake on conversation with his inane babble. Opie is the luckiest man in the world because he's the only Millionaire Receptionist to ever exist.
1 mr__hat 2014-02-03
You are wrong. At the end of the day it is still his show. There is no show without Opie.
He is not a comic nor a brilliant social commentator. That's why he brought in Ant and later Jimmy. He is a a "radio guy" who has created, in my opinion, the greatest radio show in history. A while back Ron Bennington talked about Opie, Anthony and Jim when he announced that his show would be leaving the channel. While he praised Anthony and Jimmy being "one of the best, one of the funniest" etc. at their roles, he called Opie the best in the country. Ron is one of the very few people who has seen Opie working for over 10 years on and off mic, and actually knows how a radio show works and what it takes.
2 JohnQNo1 2014-02-03
Ofcourse there's a show without Opie. There have been many shows without Opie and his absence hasnt been that noticeable except for the lack of irritating comments and stale pop culture discussion. No one's been accurately been able to answer what the fuck he actually does! Like I said, Sam could do just as good, maybe better, job than Opie.
0 Happy_ScrappyHeroPup 2014-02-03

3 [deleted] 2014-02-03
opie often makes me cringe, but the show is worse without him.
3 Gastrotech 2014-02-03
Part of me feels that Sabean may have given the boys a few "hints" when the show restarted this year. Things just seem a little different. Opie seems to have less "Opie" stories, although there are still a few. More calls which can be annoying sometimes but it also tends to drive the show forward with new topics.
Things have just been clicking lately. Opie and Ant seem to get a long better, especially when Jim is out. It's hard to narrow down exactly what's different but it all seems to just be working.
3 sukotsuto 2014-02-03
He's the one with half the balls to do crazy, cringey or horrid evil shit. Ant backs down when things get real and Jimmy couldn't do it because he feels bad for the other person too easily. Staff and interns can't do evil stuff by themselves unless it's against other staff.

I think there's a pretty big difference between Opie of the last 6-8 months and Opie of the last however many years. I listen to older shows all the time and his whole vibe is different, he's got too much energy, he tries to match Jimmy and Ant joke for joke, he interrupts constantly for no reason. It's horrific. In the last 6-8 months though I think he's been great mostly. People gave him shit for that stupid fake phone call about the car crash but Ant did the same shit with Jenna Marbles and no one really cared. He has douchy moments but 90% of the time I really like listening to him now.
2 i_dont_give_a_care 2014-02-03

Here's a summary on Opie:
Can we move on now?
4 AngeloMacon 2014-02-03
I think Opie is a good radio host and think the show is less good without him. But in no way is he likeable. I think that's really the crux of the anti Opie crowd. They're harping on small dumb shit or things that Ant/Jim are guilty of also, but really it's just that they don't like him on a personal level.
Just a random Opie observation that has always fascinated me going back to WNEW days. Opie has no real interests or hobbies. At any given time he pretends to have a couple, but once anyone talks about that subject he falls apart. Mets, Islanders, Golf, Gym, Nutrition, music (ironically), etc.
I've never met a man who wasn't passionate about a sport, art, outdoors activity, geek thing, cars... something. He's more like a chick who views these things as disposable entertainment that are meant to be forgotten about the next day. He can talk about his family, feelings, pop culture, gossip and reality shows though, lol.
1 sortofnatural 2014-02-03
OP defending Opie?
1 TankRizzo 2014-02-03
Point blank, the boys need to get out of that Sirius building (one way or another). The environment is not conducive to the type of radio that put the show on the map. They're withering on the vine, Sirius actively stifles anything remotely interesting. The bus tour would have been great. A cruise would have been great. Another animation festival would be awesome...something, ANYTHING. Nope....they just get to sit in their tiny studio and look at shit they've been asking to be fixed for years. But hey....at least they're a media destination now!

0 thelastassblaster 2014-02-03
Opie can be bearable sometimes, but usually I fucking hate everything that comes out of his mouth. He was actually ok when they had gervais and rogan on the other day because he didn't interrupt or speak much at all really. I think if he spoke 50% less than he does I'd actually like him but he's a huge attention whore and that prbly won't happen often. Also, my favorite shows are nopie shows so I completely disagree with anyone saying he makes the show better. Sam could do a bettter job, and I'm no huge fan of his either, but he knows his place
-1 1mcKid 2014-02-03

That cheese pun bit they did the other week really had me rolling, and it was all thanks to Opie
1 thelastassblaster 2014-02-03
I'm not with you on that one. I was seething at Opie over those unfunny, never ending cheese jokes. specially since Jimmy tried to change the conversation to something really interesting, The silk road and the arrest of its founder, only to have opie say "wait, wait" and put another cheese joke caller on the show just as jim was midsentence and follow it up with about 20 more.. He stinks and I don't like him.
1 congelado 2014-02-03
The bit was reminiscent of a Ron and Fez bit which is why i enjoyed it so much
-2 0100101001010010 2014-02-03
Opie is the rudder. He can be obnoxious and annoying, but so can all of them.
The show works best when they are together. I do like Ant and Jimmy days for the reminiscing about the old days.
In terms of being awful, Opie is well about Sam. Sam is the wrost. I hat sam!

Oh.. captain of the ship. What a great title! he needs to here this!
-7 WoopEmGangbangStyle 2014-02-03
This is obviously coming from someone who has never listened to a Antimmy show, or a Ant show, or a Jim and Friends show. Opie has been good lately though. His ego seems to be in check, until the next time when it's not and he ruins the show by taking Bobo and Lady Di calls
13 kgt5003 2014-02-03
A little inside scoop for you. Bobo and Lady Di aren't sitting around calling the show. The show calls them and Opie puts them on and acts as if they just called in by saying "what do you want?" They use these guys as filler when they don't have any bits working. This was pretty much given away the one time where Opie said "what do you want?!" to Lady Di and she responded with "you guys woke me up" and Opie responded "You're killing the bit."
6 WoopEmGangbangStyle 2014-02-03
OFcourse he does! He's the destroyer…of radio shows.
0 Ebhagz 2014-02-03
Yeah or he'd whisper on air saying "Call the Show" when they're talking about Bobo
3 Biohzd79 2014-02-03
The staff calls them. Both those idiots said "You Called Me" after Opie said "What do you guys want"
2 10below 2014-02-03
Nah, I have. There is no direction to those shows. Sure, they are funny. But... lots of times they go no where. Or spin in circles.
-1 WoopEmGangbangStyle 2014-02-03
lol Yeah who wants a naturally flowing conversation unencumbered by the inane utterances of retards, and the constant shoehorning of bits? That's dumb and directionless.
