So we can all pretty much put the talk of an O&A podcast to bed in 2014, right?

Opie has already said that doing a podcast everyday is stupid.

Anthony while having a quality studio with a visual element, can't host an entertaining show for shit (sorry Ack-Ack)

and they won't be making much of any money from them.

People say look at Adam Carolla's Network, ok but Carolla's breaking even (barely) and it's mainly used for his standup and merchandise.

Not only that again, why the fuck walk away from MILLIONS just to make peanuts in ad revenue, because if people won't even pay for SIRUSXM subscriptions or Audible downloads, they're not paying for a podcast.

They'll resign for 2 more years

I disagree, I think they'll resign rather than resign.

I disagree, they will resign.

Yeah I'm resigned to the fact they will probably resign

Yes, finally we can. Most critically-minded folks shut it down the minute the idea surfaced, and with good reason. OnA are not the DIY type; they want to show up, have fun, and hopefully be treated with respect... none of those things requires a podcast.

I get the impression that Rogan made millions off of MMA and Fear Factor, and he's hardly doing his podcast to make money; he's doing it for fun.

Carolla is a really savvy businessman, and I get the impression that he IS doing well for himself, but it's mostly because of booze sales. It sounds like his shows are a Mangria-fest. For instance, if Carolla sells 1000 tickets at $20 each, that's $20,000. A 1000 seat venue costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000 a night, once you factor in the union costs and all that. So Carolla needs to fill it to at least half capacity to break even right? But add Mangria sales on top of that, and that's just 100% gravy. If Carolla can sell even 250 bottles of Mangria a night that's an extra $5000 a night.

Basically Carolla probably makes more money off of selling Mangria than off of selling tickets to his shows, but the two are synergistic; the easiest way to promote Mangria is with the podcast and with his live shows. It's the same way the 50 Cent got rich; he made more money off of his Vitamin Water promotion than he made off of his CDs.

I wonder why O&A don't get into the booze business? I'd rather listen to them talk about whiskey and beer than Lady Gaga. Tom Leykis pursues this angle too, and has a weekly show devoted to booze, and they bring it up on their podcast quite a bit too. Similar to how Rogan can't stop talking about pot.

Rogan and Carolla do it for fun, but as a way to promote the live shows. Carolla has several revenue streams - royalties, investment interest, real estate holdings, car investments, live shows, Mangria, book sales, and other things I can't think of at the moment. Lots of people hate on him, but he really did the podcast game right (Kevin Smith as well) - diversify shows, find out which ones work, use Amazon links, do live shows, integrate products (Mangria, books, etc.). I just don't see O+A doing this.

Why does Carolla have a painting of Ben Bernanke in his living room? How odd:

(That's his first house, found the listing from the realestalker blog that I posted from a minute ago.)

Hmmm, I can't see them without signing up if I don't live in the area...

this topic is posted once a week, at least. they will not walk away from millions of dollars unless they can get better, higher paying sponsors to help them make a figure close to what they make now.

I don't blame them. And yeah, Anthony has his talent buck lacks direction. They'll milk Sirius for the Titanic it is..being a format that had so much potential, but wasted it on Stern's ego, and will probably not be revitalized for another generation.

Neither of them are delusional about what the fans will or won't pay. Sirius pays them on the numbers they bring, so they're very gainfully employed now.

Carolla and Maron both got lucky because they took a chance when they had few options. Rogan gets the audience because he pulls not only comedy, but Alex Jones fans and disgruntled George Noory fans. Most podcast shows that have come in after the early birds aren't making enough to do it on a regular basis.

Jimmy is the one I see doing a podcast separate, because he's really wanting a talk show of his own and he's getting itchier for it as time goes on.

Right - a podcast really is only a vehicle for making money a la Maron and Carrola when you tour behind it and make stand up / show money. Kevin Smith does this to even bigger numbers, because he was already doing huge one-off dates. O+A are not going to leave New York constantly to tour their podcast. I don't blame them, why do that when you can just head over to the studio and punch in for a few hours?

I hadn't considered Kevin Smith. And he IS successful with his live gigs. I was at Comicon this year and Smith had a line around the block.

Maybe it's the booze and drugs angle? Carolla is pimping out Mangria constantly, and Smith and Rogan are always doing Pot Talk.

Maron promotes sex toys and postal meters :(

It's like the EDM thing, half of the people that go to EDM shows just want to get high and couldn't care less about who's playing.

Straight edge comedians like Maron, Norton and Quinn can't pursue this angle; it would be hypocritical to promote booze and drugs if you're sober and the audience would see right through it. At the same time, booze sales are a huge part of comedy profits.

Maron does live shows and just had a Netflix special he couldn't have had without the podcast, as well as being at SXSW, etc. I know he's not banking like the others, but he also got an IFC TV show out of it, so not doing too shabby.

Norton and Quinn don't care about their audiences drinking, everywhere they play has booze. Norton should just write another book and hawk it via a podcast, with his live gigs, and talk with comedians, etc.

Listened to the show today and after o&a talked about meeting the ceo, and getting certain answers as far as the app goes... they seemed a lot more positive. they'll be back.

One barometer of Carolla's success as a podcaster may be his home; he purchased this for about three million a few months back:

http://realestalker.blogspot.com/2013/09/adam-carolla-snags-suburban-family-man.html

IIRC, he has multiple properties and once mentioned living in Malibu, which is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the United States.

Basically the 'regular Joe' thing is a schtick I think. Jim Norton spends his money on hookers, Carolla spends his money on Lamborghinis, Audis, and luxury real estate.

Not saying that one is better than the other, but I don't think that Carolla is struggling.

He made a lot of cash pre-podcast.

Whenever they have people come in saying that they make a lot of money from pod-casts, I feel that their "a lot of money" is not the same as O&A's "a lot of money".

I agree. Nobody walks away from millions for just because they aren't allowed to work more than 20hrs. A week.

We will know more once the new show is put in place. It is considerable that they met with the CEO yesterday. You don't do that with people you are showing the door to.

Can we talk about that meeting for a sec? I have a CONSPIRACY idea. Hear me out: A CEO doesn't have time for impromptu meetings, he schedules ahead of time.. the meeting was THEREFORE a surprise to OA& Jimmy...but was planned by Sabian and CEO. Surprising O&A was deliberate.

The CEO was unnecessarily mean to the boys, his#2 show WHY? because he wanted to shut them up. Sabian has connections with CEO, and asked him to do him the favour of sitting the boys down.

OnA were had, and don't even know it. They will stop demanding better treatment because they're afraid of the big bad bossman, man-children that they are. Any time they get on Sabian's nerves from now on, can be handled with the simple, 'this talk is bothering the CEO,' worth the inherent threat of a firing if they persist. THUS, no more ongoing management gripes.

Thoughts?

It certainly helps Sabean if he has the full weight of the CEO behind him and it also helps OnA to know the CEO, James E Meyer's name. I don't think it was a surprise intentionally. It most likely came up between Sabean and Meyer something like "can I bring them in for a few minutes after their shift?" The boys went like they should.

None of us were there, but based on what OnA said I don't think Meyer were unnecessarily mean. If it's bothering the CEO means something, sure! However, if it's bothering anyone else (such as Howard) then OnA don't need to worry about it. Meyer basically was saying I am the boss. I will handle the corporate stuff and you handle the show stuff.

It didn't strike me like he gave a shit what the boys did.

I disagree, they will resign.
