Since Ricky got twitter he's become awful. I've seen a definite decline in his sense of humor. He can't handle being insulted, even as a joke. Steven's joke was hilarious. Even if you don't laugh you can clearly see that it obeys a simple joke structure. You can easily imagine Ricky or Stephen Merchant coming up with a joke like that in the podcast days. Twitter ruined him because he self selects his sycophants. He's lost a lot of his self awareness that made him so good in the early years. Bringing back David Brent for youtube was a huge mistake that would never have occurred to him without twitter fans bringing it up every day.

I watched Derek solely for Karl, but it's an awful show. The melodrama is laid on way too thick. The old people are all cool and dignified in their old age, and their kids are all ungrateful and only Derek and the other staff care about the old farts. Repeat that storyline every episode. Not one old pedophile or cunt in the entire home.

Karl is undoubtedly a good actor but you are all correct in saying that the show is somewhat repetitive and lacks the edginess previous shows had and I am now convinced that for Ricky to have a show that's truly innovative he needs his co-writer Stephen Merchant who by the way has his own show now on HBO 'Hello Ladies'.

I haven't seen it but heard it should be pretty good.

Hello Ladies is not as good as I hoped but it's decent. Derek is a fairly unique concept for a show but it just repeats the same theme each episode about how old people could never be cunts, and how care workers are so kind and under appreciated, even the retarded ones. Derek forces you to like the characters so much you end up hating them, whiles Hello Ladies forces you to hate the characters you actually start to like them. Gervais forgot all the rules of comedy by making his lead character a perfect angel, and Stephen Merchant went overboard by making his such a one dimensional twat that it takes way too many episodes to like him.

It has a pretty cliched premise, but they've at least kept each episode fresh. Given that it was pitched as a show about an awkward guy trying and failing to get dates they've so far managed to squeeze unique scenarios into that structure. I'm at least enjoying most of each episode.

I've watched the whole season now. Initially I liked the cringe factor, but there just aren't enough jokes in the episodes, compared to say, Eastbound and Down. Kenny Powers says some hateable shit, but then he says something so funny that you're back on board. In Hello Ladies, Stephen Merchant does something cringey and funny, but never redeems it with any payoff, jokes or otherwise. His character really is a douche, and you aren't rooting for him to get the girl, which aren't girls that have any redeeming qualities either. I really want to like it, but it has gotten kind of boring and stale by the end.

I haven't seen the last two episodes yet, but the fact that I haven't rushed to watch them means I probably agree with you.

I just discovered Wilfred with Elijah Wood. Not really anything like Hello Ladies, but all the writers have worked together on other projects but the quality is so different. It's such a good show, and I keep putting off other things to watch another episode.

I'm going to get into Wilfred soon, I've heard the first season is great.

Weird, I'm watching Hello Ladies right now. It's pretty funny. Some great cringe humor. All the characters are pretty hateable though.

Ever since he's been on social media he has become much less funny. Reading what everyone say's about him has obviously made him very insecure. And derek and the whole "kindness is magic thing" is so cringy.

I liked Derek, but you do have a point about it being more repetitive than a 7 episode show rightly should be. The last couple of episodes left me disappointed. What was the point of introducing the rapper character? It was pretty much the same plot as with the young girl. The last episode felt kinda forced, too. The funeral stuff especially. The scene with his dad was nice, but why didn't they introduce that plot earlier, or at least dedicate more time to it? Most of the final interviews had the characters mirror stuff they already said earlier in the series, with the exception of Kev, whose speech at the end I really liked. I thought it was cool to build up his character as comedic relief for 7 episodes to allow him to have a serious moment.

I really don't get into o&a (or their guests') semantics so I will keep that shit goin here...

When Gervais was on XFM (a radio show, some of them are on youtube) he did characters such as a chinese man call Ho-Lee-Fook with an over the top accent... to be honest I was going to list them all but I've forgot them, I only listened for Karl Pilkington anyway.

He's made jokes about AID's, gay people, fat people etc while it's on stage it's OK for Gervais to say these things but on twitter it's not?? I think he's only doing this because he got slated for using the word Mong.

Fuck Gervais anyway and who'd know what the fuck Derek would say nobody watches it, the first two episodes were bollocks. The Office was brilliant, then the U.S version came out and is far superior. Steve Carell was better in it.

StevenKnight has been the most proficient youtube uploader of any show I've ever seen. Everyone on the show knows his name and they have actually referenced and used audio from his uploads on the air several times. He is beloved by a lot of us.
