Pop Culture talk - Yay or Nay?

0  2013-09-04 by pbpble

Just got to listening to yesterday's show. Personally, not only did I not give a shit about the VMAs but I did my best to avoid the predictable reactions to it. Hearing Opie drone on and on about it was awful to me. But I was wondering, do other OnA fans care about that kind of shit? I'm used to being in minority opinion, but I feel like the fanbase isn't the type that's following Bieber or gives a fuck about NSync.

Only when Sam interjects/plays straight man.

O - "We just discovered this song called Gangnam Style!"
S - "What!?...it's been out for months..."

I HATE when Sam does that shit. Feel like punching him in the tits when he does it.

Anything beats their political talk

I get a huge kick out of it. They're always out of touch and they complain and it becomes so cringy that it makes it hysterical.

I love pop culture stuff. The reality is that every rube at work talks about dumb news shit, so sometimes it's fun to enter the discussion with a funny and unique perspective that you might hear on O&A. I like it.

So you just repeat other people's opinions in your personal conversations and think you're unique?

Not necessarily, sometimes I might use them to play devil's advocate. Just to kind of get other people's take on it

I enjoy the pop culture chatting when it is timely. Don't talk about Miley a week later.

To be fair, you're a broad (presumably). It'd be like polling Indians to get the general feeling on genocide.

True.

Nay. Don't really care. I will say that news topics get my attention though.

Sometimes they talk about pop culture and then they blab on and on about music. Didn't care for the Eminem discussion.

Occasionally funny, but ultimately I end up asking myself, "Why are we talking about Justin Bieber? Who cares??" I guess it's fine, but I'd prefer they come up with something more interesting or funny. Seems kind of lazy.

I don't mind. I do wish they would do bits again though

i hated it as much as OP. O&A wouldn't be O&A if they can't find a fun or interesting angle on it, but ultimately who gives a fuck about vma, whatever it fucking means, miley's non existing ass, i'd still hit it for the story and eminem's new song, that sucks more dicks than a guiness book of world records hooker. all just unbearable shit. talk about things that matter. syria is the new cuban missile crisis motherfuckers. what do i care about kirsty alley being impregnated by a horse or whatever. fuck popculture. i fuck you in your mouth. don't ban me for using foul language. or ban me, what the fuck do i care. a container of coffee is all i need to function.

yay

I'm not sure what they would talk about if they didn't discuss current events, whether it be pop culture, news events, or politics. I will say I'll take pop culture talk over WWE discussions.

pop culture, news events, or politics

I tend to seperate news and politics from pop culture. I know it's all intertwined now in mainstream media, but 'the guy from that show did something moderately interesting' doesn't strike me as real news.

This morning was a PERFECT example. They're talking about the '79 Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader TV movie, which a) pretty much fits with the demographic, and b) Ant and Jimmy's as well (Opie won't admit it). Whether or not the listener liked the film (ha ha), Jimmy and Ant clearly did/do, and were starting to riff ... just as it was going somewhere, Opie stopped them SHORT, with something like, "Okay, Ryan Seacrest ... "It couldn't be more obvious how anxious he was to get them off of that topic.

I just don't get it; these guys are totally successful for NOT following general pop culture, etc. and it seems that Opie (powered by Sam) is forcing it, or something. It's just odd, and I feel the show is suffering for it.

Jesus. If they stopped doing the things that people complain about there wouldn't be a show. Quit bitching.

Fuck off fanboy faggot

That's just outright mean. I feel threatened. I'm going to HR.

When I used to listen to Howard I felt the same.i don't give two fucks about Pop culture or news . Having Sam in always makes it worst since he loves that garbage .

Hey! My first time posting about the show ... been listening straight through for the last three years, and sporadically before that, but all the time on 'NEW ... the pop culture question is a good one; their doing this is a good example of the show sounding forced these days. I'm sure Anthony is not into it, but as Opie evolves into Howard (mellowing, etc.) it sounds like something he demands - as well as Sam. Why is that kid on the mike so much? He doesn't have a good voice, is drenched in crap '90s pop culture that listeners don't care about ... it has to be an Opie plan to sound relevant. These guys shouldn't be worrying about commenting on what's "hip" - it just makes them followers. I was blown away by the worst of shows recently - these guys are losing their chemistry and edge FAST. Still a good show, but nowhere near what they were ... sorry to sound cliche, but it's sort of a shame ... Anthony can be doing so much more, it seems!

Couldn't agree more with everything you said. Not only is this talk regulating Ant and Jim to uninterested 'Yes Men,' it's completely opposite of what got me into the show, which was the kind of counter-culture (mannnn!) who-gives-a-fuck attitude. I've been listening to old recorded shows during work recently, and when I get to listen to the day's show it's clear how much this kind of talk drains the energy from everyone else involved.

Did you mean pop culture talk or pop music talk? There's a pretty huge difference.

Not really
