I did think that his interview with Garry Shandling was cringeworthy though -- still trying to figure out if that was a bit between them or not, but I digress.

It wasn't. Gervais made the mistake of talking to Shandling like he was his peer or something, and Shandling, recognising Gervais as a one trick pony that got lucky was having none of it.

The other interviews in that series, Larry David, Christopher Guest, were trailed constantly for fuckin weeks on UK TV and rerun numerous times, The Shandling one was sneaked out late at night with no promo and never seen again. It wasn't a bit.

I think since then Shandling has tried to row-back, saying he was trying something that didn't work, but that is presumably 'cos Gervais is now a name in the States ... which is a mistake, because when the current UK backlash against Gervais finally catches up to him in America, Shandling would have looked golden for spotting this gobshite straight out the gate.

Yeah, a lot of people are just pretty much fed-up of his schtick.

The first season of the Office is rightly highly-regarded, the second less so. The first season of Extras is seen as a 50:50 proposition, the second an abomination and an absolute betrayal of the characters. The stand-up is generally considered uninspiring, the films he made utter shite, and the midget show just a tired out phone it in retread of the same-old same-old.

There is an ambiguity as to how much of his unpleasant "characters" are characters and how much is genuinely the smug, boorish, hypocritical misanthropic arsehole that is Gervais.

The UK has seen a lot more of him, for a lot longer, and it eventually got quite tiring. Right now in the States he is still regarded somewhat exotic I suppose ... that'll pass. And against six peerless seasons of the Larry Sanders Show, Gervais can blow me.

Yeah, there's no UK backlash. His recent sit-coms just haven't been as highly rated as his older ones. I didn't really watch them, I liked the pilot of Derek but they're just a bit average in my opinion. An Idiot Abroad and the Podcast stuff still do great.

People just like to complain about Gervais, his career has just kind of gone from "Amazing" to "Good", so people just like being overdramatic about it.
