[I like Opie too. I like all members of the staff. Each character is important for the development of the story. I really enjoy character development the most and that is where Opie shines, he has the most overall growth. No offense to any of the other players in the show. I listen to every god damned minute of the show because I have long commutes, but more importantly because I enjoy the show as a whole.]
I still listen to Stern, though I'm like weeks behind. It's a really odd show now. He has really weird monologue-ish type jokes that he forces into news stories and he's not even a little bit genuine or honest with his audience anymore.
He pretends that America's Got Talent asked him back when in reality he signed a 2 yr deal so he wouldn't look like a failure if they decided to let him go after 1 season and he gives the network line when anyone brings up the fact that the ratings have been down.
I have no idea how anyone can say O&A are Howard clones. It is a completely different show and a different vibe. I think the only people who honestly think that are just such die hard Howard fans that they believe everything he says.
Whoa, you pretty much summed it up. Also, there's Adam Carolla who seems to be stuck in 2003 morning radio stupid sound effects/rants/news with the hole format.
I was just talking about this in another thread. I used to love Loveline, most of my nights growing up consisted of playing video games with the sound turned down and listening to it.
My views of Drew and Adam have shifted so much since listening back then. I used to think Drew was a caring guy and I used to think Adam was the funniest guy on radio.
I still listened to Adam's podcast up until about 2 yrs ago when he got way repetitive and boring. His morning radio show from 2006-2009 was pretty good but I doubt I would have listened to it had I known how good O&A were.
I actually still listen to Bryan and Andersen's podcast The Film Vault, but I know they had some weird falling out with Adam. He doesn't seem like a fun guy to work for. I think you're absolutely right about Howard rubbing off on him, it would have been way interesting had he gotten the Jackie chair instead of Artie as opposed to him going and doing his own thing.
I love the show, it's a bit more focused without a bunch of sound effects and distractions. The old lovelines are up as well as a podcast, they are really funny.
I could never really get into WTF. I've listened to him a couple times, there's just something about Maron that doesn't draw me in. Nerdist is ok, though a little try hardy at times, his interview with Max Landis was interesting as fuck though.
Maron is an acquried taste, so with him you gotta start with your favourite comics and then you get used to, then start to like and then love Maron's personality. Then you wanna listen to everything he does.
Yea, I just saw that he had Mel Brooks on. I'm amazed at the level of guest that guy gets.
Do you listen to Nerdist at all? Here's a litte bit of the Max Landis interview. The guy is the son of John Landis, who directed Coming to America, Animal House, American Werewolf in London and Three Amigos. Max Landis writes screenplays and has sold like 50 scripts in the past couple years. He wrote Chronicle and might be the next JJ Abrams in a couple of years. It's a way interesting interview and gives you some insight to how the industry works.
Yes, I listened to The Nerdist interviews with John K and Billy West after the Ren & Stimpy book came out two weeks ago. I can't stand the hosts. Very vanilla. Edit: Ok, "can't stand" is way too harsh.
I'll check out Max Landis, although he seems kind of like a hack and my least favourite type of screenwriter.
Because Howard is the "king of all radio" and anyone else who is also doing a talk radio show is clearly ripping him off. Howard invented talk radio, hoo hoo
Stern Show isn't the same without Artie. He needs to at minimum bring in some comedians to sit in his chair to break up the Howard/Robin self promotion.
At least people here have differing opinions. All the talent, guests and staff have their pluses and minuses (with the exception of The Legend) and even though people on both subreddits feel the need to defend Howard/Opie no matter what at least there is a wider diversity of opinions.
if there was no opie, the show would sound like every fucking podcast out there, just a bunch of dudes rambling on forever with no direction. i listen to OandA cause its a radio show and has way more to offer, sure you can do anything on a podcast but its usually just two comics talking about shitty LA comedy.
if more east coast comics had podcasts it would be better, burrs podcast is good every week cause you dont have to sit through some boring guest and YKWD was good when it was him and joe now its crowded with unfunny nobodys, burr was right when he said he needs shittier comics around him to feel better about himself
My biggest gripe is that Opie gets a free pass when he says something stupid, believes a joke is true, or fumbles on big words. He talks like Vos (but not as funny)... but if Vos says something like 'liberry' you hear Opie and the rest laugh for five minutes. If Opie does it, no one mentions it unless Opie points it out.
I find Opie the most likable of the three, but this is totally true... At least Opie admits it, though (like on Friday, when he was talking about not being able to take the type of criticism the show gives out). I still remember the heart attack incident with one if the old message boards with Anthony - his attempts to justify being phased were uber-douchey).
Don't get me wrong, they're far and away the best show on radio IMO, but it doesn't make them infallible).
Lately there's been an noticeable increase in arguing about Opie on this subreddit. It doesn't seem to correlate with anything Opie is doing on the show.
The show won't function properly without all 3 of them working together. People like to say "The show will be better without Jimmy, can't stand him." "Opie provides nothing to the show." "Cock and balls, everything's all cock and balls." "Ant rants too much and has no idea what he's talking about in regards to race / guns / political belief"
I have no problem with any of those 3, and the show is less entertaining without them. It is just, however, to complain about the staff. The staff is largely incompetent and many of them should be sacked.

[It's ok, I don't feel anything for your hate towards the brackets. I'm not a fan of valley chip though. I find him to be very groaty.]

There's a new podcast that's just Adam and Drew. It's the closest we'll get to having the old Loveline, and I love it.
1 ValleyChip 2013-02-24
I had no idea that existed, haven't followed Adam in a while. I'm gonna check it out. Do they get calls and junk as well?
1 NefariousBanana 2013-02-24
Yeah, some shows they have people call in asking for advice.
