Vonnegut was on a panel with the guys who do the Penny Arcade webcomic, and was clearly upset at being lumped in with them (despite the amount of fan crossover). He said something snarky about it, so the Penny Arcade guy said "I loved those Star Wars novels you wrote", and it all went to shit.
I saw him at an anti-nuclear proliferation panel and he stood up from the dias and walked out before speaking. I guess he was tired of waiting for all those other speakers to wrap up before it was his turn lol.
Just understand that Paul Verhoeven has never read the book. He got someone to read the book and write a script, and then he made a bunch of suggestions to emphasise the themes he wanted to talk about and had them re-write it accordingly; and as such it's not much like the book at all.
My biggest complaint about it is that it and its shitty sequels have kept the name alive and thus prevented a remake that's closer to the book; I think it would make a great mini-series.

Douglas Adams was fantastic.
But I don't read sci-fi.

Robert A Heinlein. Lieutenant in the Navy, engineer who invented a bunch of stuff, wrote Starship Troopers to encourage people to join the military.

I like it - it's a good sci-fi action romp.
