They want to impose labor standards on Tomato growers in Mexico, where Wendy's gets tomatoes. These labor standards impose a higher tax per pound of tomatoes, so naturally Wendy's wants to go with cheaper farms.
But, let's bring in the emotional element. Now, this higher tax they want Wendy's to pay to the tomato unions will go to "ensuring freedom from sexual abuse" for workers. Surely the Mexican Tomato Union will spend this incredible boost in revenue on preventing rape, because once they get the money they'll do the right thing.
There are other elements, getting the workers minimum wage, providing shade & water, etc. But it really seems like a political issue, in that this Mexican Tomato Union is set to make a shitton of money if Wendys can be convinced to pay higher taxes on their tomatoes.
I mean it's a labor dispute, and Wendys should probably pay a little extra to give those poor Mexican tomatopickers a few basic human rights.
But making it a big "WENDYS REFUSES TO PROTECT WOMEN FROM RAPE" issue is 100% exploitative nonsense designed to convince people who won't research the issue any further.
