Because I'm gay I was watching a couple YouTube videos comparing the books to the show and the books seem so much cooler and more interesting. Even stuff like the clothing and set pieces, they could have made so many relatively easy tweaks and it would have been cooler.
The show was relatively close for the first couple seasons, but the books do a much better job overall with the characters and don't treat them quite so black-and-white. Not that the books are masterpieces, but almost every change the show made from the books was either pointless or detrimental.
Stannis and Jaime in particular are handled much better in the books than in the show, it's pretty obvious the showrunners just didn't like their characters so they just made them bad guys.
I remember watching even the first 4 seasons and there was a constant tension. You really felt like there were nefarious forces at work, anyone could die, the characters you like are thrust out of their element and everything is up for grabs. Also, they really grew from season to season, and if they went out on a mission it felt like it was taking weeks or months.
And now it's just... Arya the super assassin. Also, this is a big dumb nerd rant, but let's talk about how Sansa just randomly pivoted into being this wise, cool, collected, cunning leader. Her whole character arc was being easily tricked, married off, and raped. Then she has the line "men are easily manipulated." You were just rescued from a sadist by a man who was castrated and brainwashed. Okay yeah you're an amazing military strategist now, got it.
She was floated and bitched through every political machination more intelligent/ambitious minds concocted. She was a thing. Either a walking cunt with ties to a powerful kingdom or a hostage.
She didn't act with guile, courage, strength, or any type of quality a competent leader would posses. Now I'm supposed to buy her role is necessary to defeat a supernatural army? Fuck off.
She literally spent 6 seasons getting constantly raped. And suddenly shes a strong queen like woman? Fuck out of here. Shit story development, it went from what was my favorite show to a cliche heroes tale. If she was being raped earlier (by Joffrey, the Hound, Littlefinger, etc) she would have had to develop a defense mechanism or experience some personal growth after realizing she needs to use her "skills" or assets to her advantage. Shit, she would have become a 3-dimensional character and moderately interesting.
But no, the best they came up with was Ramsey raped bravery & strength into her.
WhiteWalkers are more believable than her new found courage and leadership qualities.
I would have been okay if by the end she was wary of men and relationships. That would be understandable. But what would have fit her character way more is 8f she ended up like Ceresi. Basically, the inverse of what she is now: be fun and smiling and optimistic on the outside, but deep down you're a cynical liar who hates the whole system.
It would be interesting - and I'm talking in the show and not the books - if SHE was doing the "I'm going to break the wheel thing." She ends up with a burning hatred of the whole system that took advantage of her optimism. Remember she's seen nearly every villain in the story from a behind the scenes point of view.
She has insider knowledge, she knows how to play their game. In fact she's spend more time being abused and manipulated than anyone aside from Theon, she should come out the other side as a total wildcard.
That seems to be where the books are taking her, kind of. Especially with regards to her relationship with Littlefinger.
But the showrunners want Moar Cool Shit on screen so they had her get raped, feed Ramsay to the dogs, get Arya to execute Littlefinger, and Sansa somehow just turns out to be a stronk womyn.
I was prepared for at least a big climax and a lot of people to die, I wasn't expecting absolutely none of the main characters to die and a whole television show telling me to go fuck myself.
You didn't think it was a good idea to have the entire army standing out in front of the castle, with the long-range trebuchets in the very front, and having absolutely nobody firing arrows, or having stuff they could dump over the side? I mean it's not like they had some of the most battle-hardened military guys in the world right there at that moment, including one who was at Blackwater Bay where they did exactly that to hold the siege back.
How about the two people riding dragons that can decimate the undead army with fire breath deciding to fly into an ice storm for over an hour? It was such a blatant case of the writers going "Oh shit, the heroes have an obvious advantage. How do we handicap them so the scourge can overrun the city? Maybe the Lich King can turn one of them undead again? Shit. No. We need them for the battle with Cersei. Just uh, have them fly into a blizzard."
