My wife is Czech and we spend most of our time in Prague these days. There is a small but visible "Roma" (gypsy) population and has been for a couple of centuries. It was kind of jarring when I first came here as to how completely socially acceptable it is for native Czechs (who themselves are a blend of Celts/Germans and Slavs) to be openly and comfortably racist to them. Like even university professors/lawyers/successful business people will just vaguely say "they are lazy thieves and should be moved away."
