I was listening to a show called "The Untold History of Punk Rock" that dug into the backgrounds of a lot of prominent figures in the punk "movement" and it turns out that a lot of them come from the upper crust of society or have seemingly out of place connections to the military and government (much like a lot of the most famous hippie musicians). Rollins was covered in one episode and I can't remember all the details, but he had some weird connections. Also, his dad changed his name from Garfinkle to Garfield, so that probably didn't hurt his career.
