The problem with polling, as evidenced by everything we were told leading up to the '16 elections, is that they canvass populations of "traditional" and "likely" voters. Part of Trump's success was in pulling in tons of people who had never voted before.

Because of the polling numbers, many traditional voters on either side of the aisle and centrists either stayed home or just abstained from voting between what they saw as two pretty unappealing options.
