I think Hispanics are considered a Caucasian race in the US for census and data collection purposes. I am not sure as I am not an American, but I do recall hearing or reading something like that during the George Zimmerman saga.

Something like 10-15 million people are of Spanish descent, and they speak a mixture of Spanish and Portuguese along the border. They've embraced a lot of the Spanish culture in some areas so that they can classify themselves as Hispanic. Just like anyone from Haiti or Guyana. It's a broad term and doesn't define race.
