Legal question (serious answers only, please)

I'm the owner of various tribute bands. When I play in commercial places (i.e. bars and eateries), the venue has to provide for the licensing of the songs to be played.

Does that apply to private gigs too? Is the client responsible for the licensing or is it me? And if it is me and I neglected to do so, which I didn't, what's the worst to worry about?

I think the real question is do you make such a complete ass of yourself on social media to the point that the bands wouldn't want to be associated with you in any way if they became aware of your buffoonery? You might receive a cease and desist from the record their labels.
