I've heard several comedians say he would do it almost accidentally due to his rambling, stream-of-conciousness style of stand up. Kind of like if he'd heard it and it was in his head he'd just blurt it out and not realize it until you confronted him about it later. And then, like you said, he'd feel bad about it and throw some money your way.
Who knows whether that's really true or whether they're just saying that because they didn't want to talk shit about Robin Williams.
