It's weird because that's one of the most famous balls in cricket history and it's only ever happened once in the modern era. The guy did that to prevent the other player on the last ball of the game from scoring what's effectively a home run in cricket and it created a big fuss. I guess it's about staying within the spirit of fair competition. Though technically legal at the time -- now illegal -- the underarm ball was considered unfair.

Another thing to note is there is a whole heap of unstated ethical positions which players are expected to live up to. It's not supposed to be as cut throat as other sports. There's even a phrase 'that's not cricket' which is part of the language which means being unfair.
