I have had the suspicions for years now that the reason I never got hired, let alone an interview with the company was because Sam sabotaged any chances of that happening for me. Rob Cross had basically told me to go fuck myself in more nicer terms when I asked why I wasn’t even being brought in for an interview. While I thought my being associated with the show was poison to my broadcasting career, I would never have put it past Sam to do something like that because he could.

Fuck off, my sweepers and promos aired everyday at the Syracuse affiliate. I had production pieces that aired the Syracuse NPR affiliate which included interviews with community leaders, politicians and Steve Croft. I screened phone calls, cut audio and was doing man on the street stuff before “what’s the haps”. Danny even has me pull audio that he was gonna use to get a Black Phillip Demo together. Out of most of the interns that past through there I was incredibly qualified for an entry level position.

Next to XM, terrestrial radio is run by incredibly incompetent and unprofessional people. I graduated college during the recession and entered a job market that was atrocious. I went on two interviews for a promotions position at clear channel Binghamton, the first time I interviewed with a fellow Cuse graduate and thought I got the job, they had a hiring freeze because of the recession. The second time I interviewed for the position I met with a bunch of people, they were all impressed with my knowledge and I seemed like a shoe in. They said I had to meet/interview with the GM and that she would call me. Three weeks went by and I called to see why I hadn’t heard back from her. I also thought it was strange that part time promotions gig would require me to me the GM of the cluster. A few days go by and she calls me. I make my case of why I should be hired and she literally is making up reasons why I shouldn’t be hired. “As a mother I wouldn’t feel comfortable with you driving in these weather conditions”. I told her I spent the last four years in Syracuse and was used to the weather. Never heard back from them. I got a job for an AC radio station on Long Island. Went on one gig, went to one staff meeting. I was the only straight male in the room, the rest were women and one gay dude who was the caddiest queen ive ever met. All they did was shit talk a coworker of theirs, it was horrifying. A fellow intern named Bon Giovi came through on an interview, but his boss was incredibly unprofessional about getting back to me. Then I ironically enough interviewed with the promotions department of Krock, when it went top 40. I tried to explain to her brand loyalty, that I grew up listening to Krock and WNEW, but she was just a pretty face. She didn’t get that NYC had only 1 top forty station and that was the competition. I kept doing special delivery until I couldn’t do it more and when that was done, so was my career in radio.

REMINDER: This was the saga of a guy who graduated from one of the 3 or 4 best communications schools in the country. Imagine what those CT School of Broadcasting rubes’ lives were like.

To answer your question, Opie was an absentee boss. He let Steve run most of the day to day operations. But Opie did set the tone of a hostile work environment, out of apathy or incompetence, probably a combination of both. Anthony it seems from complete lack of apathy and the desire for responsibility. From my time there, it didn’t seem like he had any interest in the interns because that show was fully staffed, ran itself and there was always a new crop of interns every four months. I can’t blame him for maybe not remembering everyone’s name. But when a Pat Duffy, swivel hips Evan or an Angry Matt comes through and you take notice, you should take interest and probably use your power to help someone who was just like you get a leg up. When you reach that level of success, you should help people out. Who knows where Opie would be right now if he had done the right thing, it’s not like he never had the opportunity.
