Kevin Smith movies have not aged well
44 2019-06-18 by soggylefttesticle
I watched Clerks and that abomination Jay and Silent Bob. Yikes. Both of these “films” are cringeworthy pieces of dog shit not even worthy of Joe Cumia’s time. The only time i smirked was when George Carlin gave road head to the trucker. Fuck Kevin Smith. Fat skinny faggot

Red State is the best thing he ever made. Michael Parks should have won an Oscar for that preacher, it was maybe the best work he'd ever done. Red State is flawed but it's head & shoulders above anything else he'd ever done.
1 soggylefttesticle 2019-06-18
It grossed in 1.8 million, cost 4.5 million to make, and got a 50% on metacritic. Im gonna pass on this ome, brotherman
1 George_W_Kush_911 2019-06-18
Most of his films are flops, and his last three or four films were box office poison.
1 J-Bradley1 2019-06-18
'Yoga Housers'
Jesus Christ, he actually released that movie.
1 ScarletNumbered 2019-06-18
Of course he did, it was going to launch the careers of his and Johnny Depp's daughters.
1 Doc_McCoyXYZ 2019-06-18
It's worth a watch, I'm telling ya. It's not a masterpiece by any stretch, but as far as a "Kevin Smith" movie, it's way out of his ballpark. The thriller-y parts are fairly terrifying and it's a cool story. It even has anti-Sam advocate/sweetie pie Kevin Pollak in it.
1 ThatNiggaDre 2019-06-18
You watch movies based on how much money it made? How was the latest Ariana Grande album, societal fag?
1 soggylefttesticle 2019-06-18
Yes. And Fantastic

SO-CIE-ety!!!
1 AIIenRicketts 2019-06-18
It was almost good but then cucked out right at the end.
1 George_W_Kush_911 2019-06-18
It’s his best film because it doesn’t look or feel like a kevin smith film.
1 ManiacalChrisBenoit 2019-06-18
It's a good film but it would have been great if Kevin would have had some balls to end the film with the rapture indicating that they were right. That would have been way scarier.
1 Doc_McCoyXYZ 2019-06-18
They actually shot that ending, I believe. But for some reason he went with the other one. I thought that wouldve been cooler too.
1 TurningFrogsGay 2019-06-18
At the time, I was a loyal Smith fan, listened to a lot of Smodcast shows, and I remember how much he hyped how proud he was and what a departure it would be. What a fucking letdown.

Michael Parks was good, the rest of it was wannabe Tarantino shit.
1 TriangleDimes 2019-06-18
Red State is by far his best movie but if you imagine it made by anyone else it stops being impressive. I can't remember a single interesting thing from the movie aside from the stupid twist at the end.

1 MarcMaronsDumbFace 2019-06-18
Red state... Ew.
Your tastes in film is as bad as your taste in comedians
1 TamaInoino 2019-06-18
Clerks and Clerks 2 are fine. Outside of that his output is abysmal. (And full of attempts to make his horseface wife hot to other men)
Chasing Amy is cringe inducing, Dogma is like a film student "deep" first draft that would impress only freshman girls, Mallrats has its moments but would be completely unwatchable without Jason Lee and that shot of Joey Lauren Adams' titties. Strike Back is a greatest hits album of all these lackluster movies.
Jersey Girl is the first of his attempts to rip off another style and it's bland and ineffective crap.
Red State is the movie everybody jerks off to of his, but if you take out the performance of Michael Parks and the hard work of the cinematographer to work around Kevin's directing, it's another dumb as fuck script that runs out of steam during the third act.
Zach and Miri is Kevin trying to rip off Judd Apatow and failing. Cop Out is Kevin trying to be like studio hack directors for hire like Ratner, etc and failing.
Tusk is unwatchable, and isn't funny or grotesque enough to be a guilty pleasure, satire or so bad it's good oddity. It's shot and acted worse than most direct to video movies and isn't subversive or clever.
I couldn't finish Yoga Hosers, despite trying multiple times.
Kevin Smith is probably the biggest dumbass non-talent to ever hit it big. The luckiest man in showbiz isn't Ringo Starr, it's this cuckold.
1 ManiacalChrisBenoit 2019-06-18
Ringo Starr is considered the luckiest man in showbiz? I didn't know this.
1 Rich_Vos_Rolex 2019-06-18
Well said.
1 Vawsh 2019-06-18
The big reveal in Tusk was atrocious, shit looked like a down syndrome sausage.
1 TamaInoino 2019-06-18
https://i.imgtc.ws/fjJhxni.gif Oh, you didn't think this was worth putting up with all the shit in that movie?
1 Vawsh 2019-06-18
That right there is what you get when your original inspiration to write it was a fucking Gumtree ad. You've gotta know you're a hack when there's a wiki page listing your failed projects.
1 TamaInoino 2019-06-18
His last movie Yoga Hosers made $38,784 on a 5 million dollar budget. I have no idea how that shit cost 5 million bucks.
When the box office for your movie is right around the cost of a Toyota Camry, you're a fucking failure.
Tusk made 1.8m on a 3m budget and I thought that was as low as he could sink.
1 jestersquall 2019-06-18
Johnny Depp bankrolled that POS i believe to kickstart his daughters career.
1 TheElDan 2019-06-18
His daughter should sue.

1 JMueller2012 2019-06-18
Kevin Smith should be in prison
1 Lasagna_Hat 2019-06-18
Holy fuck, it looks like a crew member took a cell phone video during production
1 intrepidenterprise 2019-06-18
You're gay for knowing all those movies
1 TamaInoino 2019-06-18
I certainly wasted time I could've been doing something else. I'm going to go with being young and dumb as my defense.
1 intrepidenterprise 2019-06-18
I understand that
1 McGowan9 2019-06-18
I loved Mallrats when I was 14, it made me laugh my ass off. I watched it again a couple of years ago and came to the conclusion that I was a fucking retard at 14. Even more so than now.
1 ScarletNumbered 2019-06-18
Is this possible?
1 McGowan9 2019-06-18
Believe it or not, yes.
1 Bob_Weird123 2019-06-18
Agreed on all points, but Clerks and Clerks 2 are over-rated.
Smith's smart-alecky buddy in those movies wears thin after about 5 minutes for me.
1 TamaInoino 2019-06-18
To me, the first Clerks is charming in its simplicity and it does capture the retail experience fairly well. The two leads are very entertaining and play well with each other. Mewes is either take him or leave him and I'm sure lots of people find him grating. I think I fall on the side of finding him an amusing little dude.
Clerks 2 was the last thing he did that felt like he had real passion for and its uneven as fuck in a lot of places, and has his creepy "isn't my wife hot?" shit in it...but I like those two main characters and I really like Jeff Anderson in that especially. His monologue in the jail cell towards the end was really well done. Alot of the humor stumbles and it suffers a lot of latter day Smith tropes but I like it.
1 ScarletNumbered 2019-06-18
This is the most retarded statement I have read on here.
1 Bob_Weird123 2019-06-18
Fair enough but just fyi I was referring to the character Randal as the annoying one I believe, not Mewes. Always gave Mewes a pass for skating by and doing well despite his drug head history, tho I agree that many can understandably find him grating.
1 LengthyChode 2019-06-18
He has too many monologues in his movies that are supposed to be profound but they're all in the /r/im14andthisideep territory. Dogma is a great example of that. I used to love that movie, but I watched it a few years back and it made.me cringe.
1 TamaInoino 2019-06-18
The cringe inducing dialogue in both Dogma and Chasing Amy is what really exposes him. Chasing Amy comes off like what a guy who has been in 3 relationships thinks complicated sexual relationships sound like.
Dogma is what a guy who took freshman philosophy writes and thinks is soooo deep and interesting and daring in its comments about religion.
I think he too must've known this because he stopped trying to be deep immediately after these.
1 SWIMsfriend 2019-06-18
we all think this now because its old hat. before everyone wasa shithead atheist and back when being gay meant people could kill you and not expect jail time, kevin smith was pretty great. like if kevin smith died on 9/11 he would go down as one of the greatest directors of all time because he was pretty great for an indie guy in the 90s and we wouldn't realize he would still be doing the same bullshit 20 years later.
its like how chris farley was considered a has been and was on the way to being a nobody like joe piscapo and chris kattan up until he died.
Beverly Hills Ninja and Almost Heroes were considered dogshit because they were.
TL:DR Kevin Smith was as cool to white dudes in the 90s as eddie murphey was with everyone in the 80s, and if they died at the end of their decades we would consider them legendary. instead they kept living and ended up hasbeens
1 ScarletNumbered 2019-06-18
I was so glad this movie tanked and ruined not only his career, but that other fat loser.
1 SWIMsfriend 2019-06-18
meh, Seth Rogen is a kike he will never suffer in life, also he still got better roles since then. The main problem is Rogen hasn't made a good film in the last 5 years. Neighbors was his last good one and his "man-child turned woke man" schtick is doing terribly at the box office
1 amotionactor 2019-06-18
Yeah I think Clerks 1 was good but everything he’s done since then fucking sucked. Red State was really strong for a while but ultimately failed with a fizzled our crappy ending. And now that he basically just exists to cry at superhero movies for retarded children he’s just an unbelievable faggot.
1 iWhoreSchortSchorts 2019-06-18
I think Clerks 2 is funnier than the first one.
1 SWIMsfriend 2019-06-18
ironically enough he probably would have ended up more successful financially never making movies and instead getting even earlier into being an internet dude.
1 SWIMsfriend 2019-06-18
I was 14 and convinced my friends to watch it because it just came out on dvd. they thought it was shit. if even 14 year olds back then knew it was dogshit its saying something
1 JosefKWasArrested 2019-06-18
I still like Clerks, but that's the only one.
1 TaumpyTearsxyz 2019-06-18
Meh Clerks, Clerks 2 and Mallrats, Dogma are still pretty good mindless entertainment, perfect for a Sunday hungover. He should get asscancer for that retarded movie he made with his butterface daughter tho.
1 ObsessiveMuso 2019-06-18
Clerks 2 is underrated, I don't know why it's generally considered one of his worst.
The rest are pretty garbage, though.
1 juanwayne 2019-06-18
Clerks 2 is his best movie
1 TangerineReam 2019-06-18
Kevin Smith, in essence, is a fucking writer. He should've been a show runner, executive producer, producer...could've been an in-demand screenwriter, pitched and sold a show while attaching himself as talent to some degree....he just has NO BUSINESS BEHIND A CAMERA.
Could've still been successful, I think. He just shouldn't direct or deal with anyone that DP's for a living, that has a better eye than he'll ever have.
His films are meant to be helmed by true auteurs, which is WHAT HE ISN'T. Yet this nigga STILL gets money from pedo's in Hollywood to make his gahr-bajjje, while crying like a pussy over bullshit.
1 TriangleDimes 2019-06-18
His movies are also written poorly, this is a terrible opinion and you should feel bad for it. Nobody here is criticizing his fucking camerawork or blocking.
1 ThatNiggaDre 2019-06-18
Oh thanks for your opinion on good dialogue, Guy Who Uses The "this is bad and you should feel bad" meme to make his points for him online. Raise the bar for yourself.
Also, actually yeah I kinda am critical of his sloppy camera work. Nothing in his movies is ever interesting to look at, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back is one of those movies where you actually notice how poorly framed and decorated each shot is. I;m not a movie buff just a man with eyes.
1 SWIMsfriend 2019-06-18
he's a great ideas man. the problem is that shits easy. George Lucas is an ideas man, the problem is someone needs to make those ideas work.
1 DougmanWGodspeed 2019-06-18
Kevin Smith somehow created an entire film universe of characters that hold no consistency to themselves because he’s constantly molding them based on whatever’s happened to him in the last few years. Jason Mewes got sober so therefore Jay becomes a drug dealer in recovery. Why fucking bother at that point?
1 yanggang707 2019-06-18

1 ThatNiggaDre 2019-06-18
I can both admit Kevin Smith is a total ass while still feeling nostalgia for his movies. I can watch them and admit they are cringe worthy in full, but still watch them with a soft spot in my heart.
1 NortheastPhilly 2019-06-18
The entire late 90s-early 2000s era did not age well
1 titbiggers 2019-06-18
I gave clerks a try like 6 years ago after hearing so much praise. I thought it was the biggest piece of dogshit I ever saw, never watched anything else by him. Fuck that loser.
1 OlGravylegz 2019-06-18
I fucking loved dogma when I was 14 because I thought it was really deep maaaaan. Then I grew up and realized it's not a very good movie at all. It's 90% exposition, the dialog is terrible, and very little actually happens.
Clerks was ok as a low budget indie film, but Clerks 2 was the most pointless sequel ever made. It wasn't a story that needed to be continued, and it only seems to exist because...Kevin Smith felt like it? The only thing about Clerks 2 that even reminded me in any way of Clerks was Dante's stupid beard. If it had been released under a different name it would have been panned as complete dogshit.
Mallrats is the only one of his movies that isnt completely unwatchable, and even that looks as dated as an episode of buffy the vampire slayer.

Kevin Shit.
